“If there’s a quickening, we’ll know.”
Ed rubs his thumb over the back of Stede’s hand. “A quickening.”
“We’d feel the baby.”
The baby, he says, and his hand tightens around Stede’s.
“What do we do until then?” Ed asks him, and Stede keeps his eyes for a long moment before he leans back in his kitchen chair, the wood creaking long and low, surveying the walls around him.
“Well,” Stede says. “The kitchen needs painting. Roof needs some work, and the garden needs to be built. We need to finish putting on the back rooms.” His eyes find Ed’s again. “We’ve got a lot to do while we wait, I think. And probably even after we’re done waiting.”
Ed’s smiling, an excited and anticipatory thrum starting to vibrate through his blood.
“Yeah?” Ed asks.
“Yeah,” Stede answers.
“You’re sure?”
“I am.” Stede squeezes his hand. “Are you?”
“Oh, more than,” Ed says, and Stede grins.

Stede’s mouth closes over his, and Ed can’t help it. He tries—he really does try to open his mouth, but he can’t quite make himself do it, and his lips purse, and Stede’s eyes snap open.

Summary
For as long as Ed can remember, he’s dreamed of other lives.
It started as a child, falling asleep curled on a cot, trying to block out the sound of his father in the next room. Knees drawn up and hands over his ears, he would imagine. He would be open, in the part of the day it was safe to be so, and let ideas and play and adventure surge through him until he fell asleep. He would think of the man he would be, or would think of being a child in a different home.
Sometimes, of being a child still in this home, just him and mum. Made that one come true, but it wasn’t quite how he had imagined, in the end.
Ed would fall asleep already dreaming, and as consciousness receded his mind would pick up the loose strings and run with the narrative. And it’s never stopped.
