He clears his throat. “As sound as your reasoning may be, this is going to go awry. I can feel it. A knight’s instinct is seldom incorrect.”
“Oh my godddduh!” she groans. In true ghost fashion, her body ripples with frustration. Soulvester watches her fly over, then yelps as she swivels his chair right around.
“Soulvester Boolynsky, you’re tall, dark, and friggin’ handsome. You’ve got berry boy head over heels, everyone can see it, and you’re driving us all crazy with this endless pining. Go out there, bend a knee, and ask to dance before he thinks you hate him.”
Aggressive-affectionate scolding is a delicate art, mastered only by older sisters in times of need. Equal parts moved and scared for his life, Soulvester relents. “Is that an order?”
“Sure, whatever. I’m the lawful-good commander in charge of your squadron, and I’m forcing you to talk to your stupid boyfriend. If you don’t, the world explodes.”
“Not my boyfriend,” Soulvester insists, “But very well.”
With a lot of encouragement, Soulvester asks Sprout out on a dance.

Vee doesn’t react to his tone, but the cord connected to her microphone begins to stir beneath them. “Sheesh, what’s got you this riled up today?”
“You always like to pretend you know everything until you don’t, huh?”
Sprout doesn’t realize it at first, but his face is dangerously close to her screen. He sees his reflection in it, and figures she must also see her own in his dimly lit eyes, because she makes the decision to look away from him as she swallows a blatant smile.
The effort Vee puts into hiding her grin is futile— she laughs immediately afterwards. It’s quiet, but it’s still the same raspy laugh Sprout is so used to hearing.
He feels his face heat up.

Chewing. Squeaking. A few yips and barks. Snickering. Talking, whispering, the clattering of utensils and plates. Every little noise, normally easy to tune out, was suddenly on full volume.
