“They—” Stiles choked and focused his gaze on the alpha. “W-what?”
Amidst the rubble, the groaning building, the wailing, and the scent of burning metal, Derek looked calm. The alpha ascended one step, closer to Stiles. “My love, listen to me—”
“What is going on?” Stiles’ throat dried.
“I said, listen.”
The omega’s mouth clamped shut, his lips trembling. The muscles in Derek’s jaw bulged as if he struggled to stay still.
“I am taking you hostage.”
Stiles’ chest stilled. His lips parted. He went completely stiff, watching Derek’s lips move, but the words made no sense.
“Derek…” he murmured hoarsely, shaking his head. “What…”
“I am not going to hurt you.” Derek’s voice went hard as steel. He spread his arms as if showing the lack of armor. “But you are coming with me. It is an order. Do you understand me?”
Stiles shifted his gaze from his mouth to his eyes and flinched back.
They were red. Burgundy, like the blood splatters marring his face.

Coming back to LA was supposed to feel like coming home again. Eddie’s heart belongs here - belongs to this place, and these people who reminded him of what it meant to truly live. To be alive. Coming back with Christopher alongside him was supposed to be the answer to all of his problems, as if the second they passed the Welcome to Los Angeles sign, his bones would settle. His lungs would remember how to breathe.
But, even weeks after their return, something still doesn’t feel quite right. Not wrong, exactly. Just. Just not quite whole, like there’s still a piece of the jigsaw puzzle that’s missing. There’s still one final brick to lay before the house is complete.

He didn’t want to ask for help. He could spend another hour circling around the city. But he didn’t want to. He wanted this awful horrible day to be done. He wanted to hold his child and pretend for a little bit that everything was still whole. He sighed again before pressing call and pressing the phone to his ear.

“And I will set a dozen alarms.” Buck beams at him. He already knows he’s won. He knows when Eddie is about to concede. He knows Eddie better than he knows the back of his own hand.
“Buck,” Eddie says warningly, shaking his head like he’s setting his foot down, but Buck knows better.
He leans down on his elbows on the counter, his head placed atop his hands, matching Eddie’s tone with a mock-serious, “Eddie.”
A beat passes. Eddie’s lips twitch up into a half-smile despite himself. Got him.
“...Fine. Prove your point.”

Still can’t figure out how to loosen his grip on it just a little, knuckles white with how hard he’s holding on, but he’s trying so hard to give Eddie space and time because he asked for it, because when they got together, Eddie couldn’t seem to stop looking at him when he asked Buck to be patient with him, couldn’t hide the nerves from his voice, the vulnerability of his open chest, the honesty in his fingers against Buck’s wrist where he’d held on so gently as if he was afraid to come any closer. So Buck is trying, to just sink into having it rather than wanting more, to let it be enough rather than him being too much, and he’s been doing good, mostly. He’s been doing good.
