Emmrich again faltered, hands folding in front of himself. He dithered. He searched for words. Well-spoken since childhood, he was quite unused to feeling so wrong-footed. He suspected it was something he would become well acquainted with in the immediate future.

“A friend,” Sigrid replied. Again in that simple, earnest and succinct way. “I’d like to be your friend, Emmrich.”
Something in Emmrich’s chest, utterly despite himself, swelled.
“Yes,” he murmured. “I would…like that very much, Sigrid.”
Sigrid smiled and lifted her satchel over her head. “Great. Then let’s get married.”Some years ago, Emmrich Volkarin met his wife, married her, and fell in love with her. In that order.
In 9:50 Dragon, Varric Tethras finds himself in a backwater of Nevarra, where he enlists the help of a secretive necromancer on a rainy night. These two events are not unrelated.

“Ten years ago, yeah.”
“Were they always so…” Emmrich scratched the back of his neck, visibly searching for a word in that big, gorgeous brain of his. He eventually settled on, “Revealing?”
Rook looked down at herself, realizing for the first time what might have sent Emmrich into his current spiral.
“Well,” Rook said, “they’re not really flattering with the whole full bush look—”
“Beg to differ,” Emmrich said, strained.The air conditioner is broken. Rook finds a solution. Emmrich finds the Maker. Or something like that.

“I would love to,” he replies, all gallantry, and this is how he keeps his reputation intact. Nothing about length or lack thereof, awkward realizations or—Maker forbid—crying of any sort. When she tires of him and goes elsewhere, she’ll at least have this story to tell. Emmrich Volkarin is maudlin and a dork, she might say, but he ate me out like my pussy was a peach. Summary
In Treviso, the coffee is strong, the stars are bright, and ziplines dot the rooftops. While familiar enough with the mechanism itself, Emmrich is less familiar, if at all, with the technique of using one. Typically, when he accompanies Rook to Treviso, they use the streets.
His companions do not hesitate; Lucanis expertly hops onto the line bare seconds after reaching it, and Emmrich watches him zip across. He lands catlike (Crowlike, perhaps?) on his feet, and then he’s standing at the edge of the adjacent rooftop tapping his foot. Rook throws her hands over her head, tiptoeing up to grab the handlebar as it flies. Emmrich watches her teeter on the edge with something like awe, and something else like dread.
“I’ll catch you,” Rook tells him with a wink, swinging herself to gain momentum. “Just don’t look down.”Rook, Emmrich has noticed, has trouble keeping her hands to herself--and he certainly has not asked her to. It all comes to a head on a Treviso rooftop, where their burgeoning relationship finds a new foothold under Antivan stars.
