There's a shell of numbness around him, an invisible boundary. Colors, sounds, feelings muted, muffled, dulled to a distant ache. He felt indifferent to his own presence, he felt indifferent about any presence.
No scrounging for news, or pouring over letters. He could find the motivation to if he wished and he really doesn't. Emptiness had planted itself within his chest for the time being, and there it would reside until the monotony of Privet Drive gives way to whatever awaits him back at Hogwarts. Hopefully. Or it may even remain, a constant companion.

After begging Dumbledore and getting nowhere he decides on the train back to London that if no-one else is going to look after him then he would just have to do it himself.
He dons his Invisibility Cloak and hides. He wouldn't tell anyone not even his friends. Not until he got away.
