One misstep can lead to an injury that takes you out of the game for the rest of your life. Truly, it takes a special kind of stupidity to become addicted to the rush of lives like theirs.
But that never stopped them.

“Then why haven’t you?”
Kaoru looks at the floor and Kojiro could swear there was a tinge of red on his pale cheeks, but it must’ve been a trick of the light.
“There is no point wrapping it just to get it wet in the shower and then having to wrap it again.”
“Ok, that’s fair,” Kojiro concedes. “Why didn’t you shower already, in that case?”

“Kaoru?” Kojiro’s voice is rough with disuse. He wants to gather Kaoru in his arms, cradle him to his chest and never, ever let go, but he just leans in a little. Kaoru blinks slowly, eyes opening wider, and his gaze flits around the room like a bird trying to escape a glass box; it knocks against everything in a panicked flurry, finally returning to rest on Kojiro’s face.
Kaoru opens his mouth, dry cracked lips forming words that sink into Kojiro like stones through water, “Who—who are you?”

The trouble with being in love with your best friend was, there was nowhere for that excess of feeling to go. Kojiro had no interest in risking everything they’d built together over the years, and it’s not like he could talk to anyone about his feelings. The whole situation was unspeakably humiliating.
The feeling was just too big to contain, so maybe it spilled out occasionally. Maybe, just maybe, Kojiro had been drafting a confession letter since their first year of high school. It wasn’t like he was ever going to send it. It was just something to occupy his time, a place to express the fondness that overpowered him when Kaoru sent a rare smile his way and he felt like his heart might actually, physically melt in his chest. He never intended to send the letter. Kaoru was never, ever, ever meant to read it.

For a long while, he blinked, watching their hands still linked together, Kojiro’s thumb ghosting over the back of his. “I’m not that special,” he finally said. “I’m the one who everyone leaves behind. Entertaining for a while, but it doesn’t last.”
“I’m still here…I’m not going anywhere.”
“You already did.” Kaoru raised his chin, head tilting back, hair falling over his shoulders. “You went to study in Italy, remember?”
“I–”
“Who's got the bad memory now?” He tried for a tight-lipped smirk, but it faded too soon. His vision lingered, unseeing, on the low table’s glossy surface.
Lightning flashed. The sky swirled outside, like the first seasick trappings of grief and missed chances, how it did the night before he boarded that flight, not knowing if he’d see Kaoru again or if they’d grow apart. He’d left the country with a hole in his chest.
Slowly but surely, Kaoru has been recovering from the grave injuries received in his race against Adam. Still, something isn't right. Kojiro knows it. Determined to help in any way he can, nostalgia for bygone days and an increase in quality time makes hiding his affections much harder.
