Another shaky breath filled his lungs with a painful cold that made them ache. A part of him was already missing the warmth of the fire and his bed back at base camp. His comrades continued to sleep soundly in their beds unaware that they'll wake to morning roll call with one less body lining up to greet their Captain. Zeno had gone still like a deer caught in a pair of headlights. Dried blood crusted the corners of his mouth. Crimson stains spread in messy swathes around the curve of his throat. His mouth crooked open as if to speak yet still no sound came. Leon took a step closer. His hand rested firmly on Requiem where it was nestled in the holster tucked against his ribcage. Two rounds remained after he dealt the death blow to Gideon. He estimated it wouldn't take more than one shot to put Zeno out of his misery. His thumb stroked the wing pattern of the grip thoughtfully. The other man flinched away from the agent. He squeezed his eyes shut as if he were expecting the blast of the gun to be his last taste of the living world. Shoulders hunched, Zeno tucked himself further under his lean-to of rubble as if he were afraid.
Of Leon of all people.

Summary
Jake Muller is being hunted by an elite team of BSAA soldiers through the evacuated zone of Edonia in the midst of both the civil war and a major bioterror outbreak. Terrified after watching six soldiers gun down his entire platoon, he's forced to flee in order to survive, but something about these men is even more unsettling than their efficiency in combat. Their dogged pursuit of him across the city is super human as they track him, hot on his heels, for days with very little time for rest, warmth or nourishment.
Wearing him down hour after hour, Jake is forced to face the reality that he's the prey in this relationship, and they'll catch up to him soon. It was only a matter of time before the exhaustion forces him to break. He could only pray they'll be merciful on him when the time comes.
