There were a few things that Lan Sizhui knew about himself.
First, that he was not born in the Cloud Recesses, or in Gusu, or anywhere nearby. Zewu-Jun was apologetic and kind about it when he asked, as always, but was clear to the fact that he didn’t know any more about it than Lan Sizhui did.
“You are here now,” he said gently, “and that is what matters.”
There was a vast abyss in Lan Sizhui’s childhood around the things they didn’t talk about, deep with his father’s grief.

Jin Guangyao takes a steady breath. Almost all of the conference agenda has been addressed. Everything is still going smoothly, under his watchful eyes. He just needs to make it through this conference. Eventually, all of this will be worth it.
It would be much easier to believe if he didn’t have to pee so badly that his clothing feels tight over his stomach. He plasters a smile over his grimace. He was perfectly fine with this exact amount of liquid in him for the last half of the conference. He demonstrably has enough room for it. So he will bear the press of his bladder as long as he needs.

I find the character of SecUnit 03, a.k.a. Three, intriguing from a storytelling perspective. It is ‘tabula rasa’ in ways that Murderbot is not and cannot be. This takes place during the little-described period of waiting at the end of Network Effect, and will almost certainly be non-canon after System Collapse comes out.
Heed the tags. Three will find its way in the end (because that is how I roll), but it has not escaped the Corporation Rim unscathed. There will be pain, fear, self-doubt, depression, and one very bad decision as Three stumbles its way out of the past.

“We’ll be late for the upshot.”
Shifting from concerned to exasperated, Lan Xichen took a deep breath, then exhaled, just as slowly. “I do not care about who the winners are. There are more pressing matters we should be focusing our attention on. Your shoulder is torn.”
During the hunt at Phoenix Mountain, Jin Guangyao descends a stairwell without falling, Nie Mingjue receives a wound while cultivating and Lan Xichen is there to offer support while emotional distancing.

“Horrible,” Lan Xichen gasps like a personal affront. It shocks a laugh out of Nie Mingjue.
“It’s likely one of the whiskeys meant for sipping, not for chugging.”
“Awful,” Lan Xichen counters with disdain, already pouring another shot for each of them.
