He sees the moment it clicks in Bob’s head, because his eyes go wide and he looks at John like he’s just realised something important. It’s an innocence and brightness that he hasn’t seen from Bob before, but it drowns out all the heaviness he carries with him.
“You— you hit my dad with your shield,” Bob says, almost in awe.
“Yeah,” John recalls idly, the sensation of his shield crushing dream-bones and flesh. “Uh, felt like he deserved it.”
The look Bob is giving him now is nothing short of pure wonder, like John’s the miracle here, that dopey smile again; the upward lilt of his mouth. There’s an errant curl brushing over his forehead, the tips of it resting on the tops of his cheekbone. It makes John feel oddly, like noticing something he wouldn’t have ever picked up on before.
His smile is even more disarming than before. Like John’s staring straight into the sun, defenceless.

Summary
The first couple of dollars that the machine ate up without remorse were an annoyance, something that made Dennis sigh and unzip his wallet without thinking about it to try again. By the time that the vending machine had eaten seven whole dollars, in coins, and Dennis didn’t have anything to show for it, he was close to thumping his forehead against the cool glass and hoping he could derive some sort of enjoyment or nourishment from simply just looking at the colourful packages as they remained firmly in their coils.
He didn’t often carry coins. Those were his last few dollars and he was woefully aware that somebody had offhandedly mentioned that the staffroom vending machine destroyed notes, so he wasn’t going to be getting a soda, a bag of chips or anything else that might settle his belly from the incessant grumbling it was doing.
