Of all the jokes played on him, Nie Mingjue believes this is the worst. Seeing the person that he should've only felt hate towards not only possessing attractive physical features that can make anyone swwon but also a kind heart (albeit not directed to him)?
Also realizing that he had these feelings for a long time, and only was he forced to recognize them when his last year of his uni arrived?
So fucking unfair. And yet, he found himself falling more, even when the rare, soft smile he offers to others is not and will never be exclusive for him.
Goddamnit all.
Basically, my version of the "I'm sorry I offended you. I was trying to flirt" in mingcheng, because it's too much of a good concept to fit these two

Summary
It's the first real Dragonboat Festival Jiang Cheng has had since the end of Sunshot, and while it wasn't quite the grand festivities he'd remembered from his childhood, Jiang Cheng thinks that he hadn't done too bad this time around. Everything had gone smoothly, and the disciples and civilians both seemed to have a good time of it. It's safe to say that everything had been a resounding success.
But for all that it was a success, there's still something tugging at Jiang Cheng's heart, a small hollowness that turns his expression soft with melancholy.
He misses Nie Mingjue.

Jiang Cheng sees a young man get hit by a car. He watches as the kid lets out his last breath, then takes another. Jiang Cheng decides to take care of Jin Ling - the newbie immortal. He knows how hard it is to adjust even though the first time he died has been over a thousand years ago. He didn’t have anyone to help him back then. It doesn’t mean he’s been alone all those years. He has his archenemy, the only constant in his long life, Lan Xichen.

So that was what it was: a big coincidence. Still, Jiang Cheng had come. There was a warm fuzzy feeling blooming in Wei Wuxian's heart because of that. He wanted to squash it down and to water it and watch it grow, both in equal measure.
"Lucky me, then. I was expecting to be saved by some no-name, lower-level cultivators, but look who came to rescue me! Sandu Shengshou himself! I'm flattered."
While saving Wei Wuxian's sorry ass from a pack of wild, resentful dogs and their once exiled and slightly vengeful caretaker, Jiang Cheng takes on a curse that wasn't meant for him. It puts things into perspective.

This work takes place at the end of the main MDZS novel, post-temple and death of Jin Guangyao. An alternate ending/fanfic where Jiang Cheng is helping to rebuild the Gusu library pavillion, taking the opportunity to seek out Xichen who is still deep in seclusion.

Jiang Cheng shoved the soiled scroll to one side of his desk and fetched another from underneath to continue his work. The script needn't be perfect, recopying it later could be the Lan's job if they cared enough about everything passing through their gates to be so pristine. Afraid of dirt and outside contamination... "Live in the real world," he muttered as he began to scribble, stopping halfway through because 'there you go again when he's done nothing to you.'
He took a deep breath in.. out.. and cleaned up his lines.
