“Ohhhh! How ‘bout I call?” Guinaifen suggests, fishing her phone out her pocket as soon as she finishes her sentence.
“We’ve been trying all day, no offense Gui, but I don’t—” Yanqing starts. Guinaifen’s phone rings with the telltale sound of a picked up call, then drops to background noise as she increases the volume on the phone. Yunli’s name is emblazoned on the center.
Yanqing shuts up.

Or—in the year after General Huaiyan’s diagnosis with mara, Yunli runs away on the fifth of January, becomes a somewhat honorary member of the Stellaron Hunters, cuts her hair, confuses (and worries) the hell out of all of her friends, meets her hero (Yingxing, if you were wondering), has tea with an ex-ancient goddess, meets a nice university professor, and finally comes home on the seventh of March, not specifically in that order.

Summary
It was greener back home, in a way more genuine. They were all very real trees, and grass, and vines, and all, but every piece of it isn’t actually real. They were not there, and then, they were. There was no sapling peeking out of the earth, vying for the sun. No child to crawl upon the bark as the branches reach upward towards the sky. No picking of fruit, no falling of leaves, no blossoms, no blooms. It makes her feel a bit disgusted, really, even now, ten years later. It’s not natural. None of it is.
The mad girl from District 8 returns to the Capitol for round two. She will not return home alive.

Phainon blinks as she watches Mydei say, hand. The puppy reaches her paw out, placing it on Mydei's palm. Click. A treat, a murmur of praise. Good, good, good.
"Sit up," Mydei demands. Phainon doesn't even recognize what she's doing until seconds later; tomato-faced at the dawning realization that she'd straightened her own spine, slightly, at Mydei's words. A flutter in her chest when that click sounds, and Mydei coos, "Good puppy."
And, well, Phainon is ridiculously, profoundly, severely fucked.

As Nico says the words, Jason has that feeling again. The feeling that Jason has when something’s familiar, like he did when he first looked at Nico’s face.
“Nico, have you told me that before?”
Jason’s sure that no one’s told him that since he was found at the Grand Canyon. No one’s given him comforting words like this, not Piper, not Leo. Not anyone.
“Maybe.”
“I remember it,” Jason furrows his brows. He tries to think back when he first heard the words that Nico just said, where he heard the first call that became an echo. Jason rubs his eyes; a headache might be coming his way from trying to think that hard about things he can’t possibly remember. “Gods, I wish I could remember it.”
Nico nods, but he’s frowning.
“I wish you could too.”
