Leon resists the urge to roll his eyes as he reluctantly puts his arm around her, at which point his fingers helpfully inform him that 1) her dress is entirely backless, and 2) the bits that are covered up are made of a fabric light enough that he can practically feel every curve of her smooth skin underneath.
Well, that took an interesting turn.
It takes him every last bit of self-control to school his face into a perfectly neutral expression and ask, voice level, “What are you really doing here?”
She gazes at him in that half-lidded way that he hates, and answers airily, “Same as you. I’m working.”
He raises an eyebrow at that. “Should I be worried about it?”
“The night is still young,” she smirks, craning her neck to whisper in his ear. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
(Or: A chance encounter with Ada at a ball gives Leon much, much more than he bargained for.)

"Leon," she warned, pulling out her pistol and pointing it at him. "Don't make me hurt you…"
His fingers twitched erratically as he clicked his teeth impatiently. "Oh, but you will," Leon taunted in a tone so unlike him.

She looks at him meaningfully, and when she speaks again there’s a candor in her voice that he desperately wants to believe but isn’t sure he’s ready to. “Would it be so hard to believe that I simply wanted to see you?”
He laughs, and it sounds so foreign that he’s momentarily taken aback. “Considering I’ve heard nothing from you for the last six years? Kinda, yeah.”
“Still holding a grudge over that, aren’t you?” Ada says, and the levity of it all is enough to set him on edge again. “Evidently you didn’t need my help figuring out the truth.”
Leon shoots her a look. “Doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have been nice to hear it from you.”

“Am I supposed to just wait around for you then?”
Ada can see it so clearly in that moment, every question he has ever thought of but never voiced aloud, all rushing to the surface at once, all screaming the one fact she was too blind—willfully or otherwise—to face: that these mortal attachments, these petty sentimentalities other people indulge in and she scoffs at, they were always meant to lead toward a particular destination. The strings bound both ways, and the carousel never did quite spin endlessly.
Would that she had the answer Leon wanted to hear.
(Or: For Leon and Ada, what looks like the end is merely the beginning. Sometimes, in order to fix something, you have to take it apart first.)

Her victims can’t stop telling the truth, said the EMT on-site, their tone neutral as they shone a penlight in Katsuki’s eyes. Great for asking for people’s bank account passwords. You’re in for a tough week before the chemical agent flushes out of your system—but I guess there are a lot of ways to say the same thing, right?
