Summary
The year is 1994 and the party is scattered. Most of them have moved on with their lives, putting the horrors of their pasts behind them.
Will is living in Brooklyn, attending Pratt Institute and is happy as can be... almost. He can't seem to shake the feeling that something is missing. Though he's worked hard to move forward with his life, vague memories of what could've been haunt him more than he'd like to admit.
Mike never left Hawkins. His stories never seem to find a better ending than his own, and he has no one left. He was stupid to think anything would stay the way it was, even after everything. Of course everyone left. Everyone - except One.
Dustin makes an alarming discovery.

“Wow,” Will breathes out, just on this edge of teasing. “You sound very confident about this.”
“Well,” Mike shrugs, swallowing hard in a desperate attempt to soothe his very, very dry mouth, “I don’t know why someone wouldn’t be interested in you.”
“Oh?” Will says, and it’s definitely teasing now, enough for Mike to feel himself turning warm, all down his neck and to the tips of his own – sadly unpatterned – socks. “Someone?”
“Yeah.” Mike nods. Oh, god. This is fine. “In a very arbitrary sense of the word. Just– people. Someone.”
Mike is approximately ninety-eight percent sure that his feelings are requited. That last two percent, however, has really been throwing him for a loop.

Mike felt shivers down his spine. Breathed in, breathed out. Okay, he thinks to himself. Okay. You’re exhausted, and hallucinating your ex-best friend screaming your name. That’s perfectly normal. That’s fine.
Eighteen months after everything ended, Mike Wheeler is failing to write a story about a paladin who waited too long. Then Will's voice starts calling to him from the void, and Mike has to relive every moment he was too blind to see what was right in front of him.

“Yeah, in DND Will, not real life.” Mike groans, stretching out across the smooth marble island. He smiles a little at Will bringing up his DND character. He hasn't let himself remember DND since Eddie. “In real life I’m… not. I always run away when I’m scared.”
"That's not true. You stayed with me when I was possessed by the Mind Flayer, remember?”
Mike says too quickly, “You’re not scary.”
“Not even when I’m being controlled like a puppet by an interdimensional shadow monster?”
He says it like it’s funny, but Mike doesn’t think it’s something he can laugh about. He sits up, catching Will’s gaze with his. Mike’s eyes flick between the two black eyes before he says,
“Never.”

The lighthearted moment is gone as easily as it came. Something heavy settles in Will’s stomach; dread. He hears children’s laughter, but there’s no one around. The ground he’s standing on isn’t stable anymore and without meaning too, he starts moving, walking absentmindedly. Everything’s spinning, it’ll make him throw up. Looking at the sky makes him feel like he’s in a merry-go-round. He can’t hear his friends; he doesn’t even know where they are or where he is.
He stumbles on his feet and holds onto a tree. He hears the distant sound of people calling for someone. His mind is rushing with images, flashes of faces he can’t quite place.
“Will!” There's a hand rubbing circles on his back; he turns around to see the worried expressions of people he can’t exactly recognize, but they seem familiar. “Are you alright?” The girl with dark curls in front of him asks.
He blinks.
Mike is in front of him.

Holly felt her cheeks heat up. And Mike? Mike was blushing too. His face was redder than usual—he always burned faster than Holly or Nancy did. Probably like their dad. But why did he feel like this now?
“Why do you look like a tomato, Mike?” Holly asked, squinting at him.
“What?” Mike said way too fast.
Suspicious, Holly decided.
Will laughed. It wasn’t loud—just soft and easy, like he couldn’t help it. Holly liked that laugh. It sounded warm. Like sunshine, or the lemen yellow crayons that always got used up first.
Mike immediately looked away.
Okay. Yeah. Mike was definitely acting odd.

Summary
Red lightning cracks across the sky, highlighting the ashy trees and shadow structures that are supposed to be downtown Hawkins. The buildings are wrapped in thick, black vines. The air is coated with the same white spores that snowed over Hawkins, only these are denser and didn’t melt in the summer sun. In the distance, a flock of black birds soars across the sky. Vaguely, Lucas recognizes them from Dustin’s chilling retelling of the spring break battle; the monsters that killed Eddie Munson.
“Are we… Is this actually the…” He doesn’t want to say it, doesn’t want it to be real.
“The Upside Down,” Mike confirms. He sounds almost awestruck.

Mike and Lucas are taken by the military as People of Interest to the Upside Down. Having no experience in the place, they have to rely on their own skills and what they've been told in order to survive.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Party is working hard to save them. But Dustin seems to have issues with everyone, and Will feels even more outcasted than that summer before he moved away. How are they going to set aside their problems long enough to bring their friends home safe?

Summary
The Christmas of ‘86 is drawing nigh.
With the Byers-Hopper family finally visiting Hawkins and the Upside-Down seemingly under wraps, it looks like for the first time since ‘82, it’s going to be a truly happy holiday. Now all Mike needs to do is wrap presents, host guests, and keep Will from finding out about his feelings.
If only he wasn’t so distracted by a sudden onslaught of headaches and ultra-realistic nightmares…

And more than anything, he wants Will back He wants to find him again, stand by his side, grow old together, chase their dreams, reach the top together. He wants everything. He wants all of Will — once more. And this time, he wants to do it right.
“We’re not changing this past." He said quietly. "We’re going to another one. One where we can still choose.”

Summary
They were finally free. The sky had returned to its natural blue, the ground closed up, and the fog of black smoke no longer hung over Hawkins. Mike had to keep reminding himself of that fact. Everything was perfect.
Maybe too perfect.
OR
Post season 5 fix-it, where everyone was Vecna'ed and the world did "end," and now they have to figure out how to get back home. But the way to get home might suck more than if they were to stay in the messed up, distorted version of Hawkins. At least for Mike.

If Mike can escape his repression and Vecna's curse, he just might rewrite a love story they've heard before.
