“Miya Atsumu,” drawls a voice Atsumu’s heard once or twice or twenty times whilst watching post-match interviews. He stops abruptly in the doorway and follows the voice to a face that plagues his social media feeds and the pages of Volleyball Monthly, a face that’s frustratingly better-looking in person without the lines of an Olympic net between them spoiling the view. “The benchwarmers get prettier by the season.”
Atsumu tucks his hands into his sweatpants pockets, straightens out his shoulders, and narrows his eyes. He’s done his homework for this moment, finessed information out of Kageyama and Hinata, and spent more than a few collective hours on the CA San Juan player profile webpage.
“Oikawa Tooru,” he says slowly. “Surprised they let a scrub that couldn’t make it to nationals in here. Didn’t think the barrel was so empty they’d hafta start scrapin’ it already. Onigashira musta been busy, huh?”

Summary
He reads the full subject line once, twice, thrice, and even cleans his glasses for good measure before he opens the email, hazel eyes scanning the body text. Jayce has to force himself to not skip words, taking in each one carefully, double checking that he’s seeing this right, that he actually won.
It was a possibility, obviously, that he could. He entered the contest using both his number and his work’s number; he had everybody he knew enter the sweepstakes, too, just to increase his chances. And he didn’t even need it.
Viktor Reveck, legendary stage magician, is leaving retirement for one night, one show, and Jayce got in.

Viktor focuses back on him, blinking in surprise. “Yes,” he says. “I am a scientist. I research skeletal disease. Why do you ask?”
“I’m hoping to go into science,” Jayce explains, and Viktor’s belly burns as he watches a faint blush spread from his cheeks to his ears and down his neck. “I was just wondering, you know—how you got started, a-and what you studied, and if—if you like it?”
If Viktor were a different person, with better self restraint and less interest in pretty teenage boys, he’d say something else, but what comes out is, “Been thinking about me, have you?”

It’s only when Viktor speaks, subdued and his accent peeking through, throat rumbling with something akin to afterthought, that reality whispers that they aren’t quite tourists: “My parents used to come here.”
Jayce cocks his head to the side. “To talk?”

The notion alone is enough to almost bring those pesky tears back. That insane vulnerability in his brain, the tender and abused place of him that doesn’t know how to quantify such an idea.
Jayce would give anything to Viktor, be anything for Viktor. And in this universe, he’d been his husband. Had given him his name. A gift that has lasted beyond even death.
