such a good long read. fills the (regrettably lacking) niche in zukka stuff that is about sokka and his adjustment in the world that's changing in the post-war environment. also erisenyo does one of the best azulas ive read. i love her she's so distinct and twisted up and complicated. sokka and azula make such excellent foils in this one as well... they so often serve as unintentional mirrors, and as they interact more they learn from and about each other. incredibly well paced, the relationship developments are satisfying and feel earned, the plot is well constructed, with enough foreshadowing that i anticipated the general scope of the story but with enough subtlety that i was still surprised and engaged by how things actually turned out. The world building was subtle but creative and well integrated, with the etiquette and titles and court machinations playing into the story rlly well. i especially like how the framing of the crown prince/ss as the face/will of firelord in the world reflects something of the original canon when you consider zuko as ozai's crown prince. fucking delicious.

also azula in this one is sooo choice. one of my favorite interpretations of her post-canon.
ALSO one of the only ones ive seen that doesnt do betrothal necklaces for the south which is fucking great i love when we take the time to develop the south as its own community with distinct cultural practices....

fun concept, great execution. it's a bitter pill to read stuff that's been most likely abandoned/discontinued but oh when it's worth it it's so worth it. the character writing is good and the tantalizing little peek we get at the broader troll/human society world building is some of the better and more considered versions of it that ive seen. so much fun.

yes exactly. like i dont tend to come to svss for real-feeling emotional exploration but this is such a well executed look at binghes feelings to me... the bit where he says hes built wrong. all his big feelings. anyway its so well done in a number of ways, the moments where dialogue is elided in favor of just giving the reader the information as binghe experiences... his distance from people vs his actual dialogue w sqq.... ugh. and the food and cooking and service and scarcity and connection

this is the problem: evie still doesn't know what love should feel like and what it should mean to her, jay still comes home with anger in his eyes and blood on his fists, carlos still sits closest to the door and eyes the teachers with something like distrust, mal still wants to lash out and breathe fire even squeezed into the squeaky-clean-and-good of auradon high.
this is the problem: the isle of the lost was a lot of things, and none of them were good.

read this once, went to go read other things, and had to go back and find this cuz i was still thinking about it.
augh. not super invested in the source material but very glad that i read this. i have a weakness for stuff with poetry in it (and i loved the poems great poems) but also it was just really lovely and made me feel a little bit uncomfortably seen and also made me reconsider my deep dislike of roadtrips.
wont say much about character work bc im no authority but i do like the way they're fleshed out-- eddies anxiety and steve's like deepset loneliness... it's very nice.
anyway. i think this line does well to describe what i like about the writing as a whole: "Steve had a really nice way of saying things, really simple and plain but beautifully honest and specific."
that is how the poems feel but also the prose and the all of it. great stuff.

ough augh. it's a good jason. it's a good dick. it's a good bruce. the sibling dynamics are like falling down a set of stairs (in a feelings way) (this is a good thing) (i liked it) (it felt very true to the world and characters) like theyre them its not healthy but its not not trying to be better and it has the bones of a better sibling dynamic but the negatives are more extreme and the positives are hard fought and tenuous.
