holy jesus fuck this fic is so disturbing and disgusting and appalling and wow. i cannot understate how horrific a read this is but it's SO well done. the way the author captures the initial shock & subsequent delusions and drags you along through dakota's complete and utter breakdown because truly who could even begin to comprehend having to eat the rotting dead corpse of your coworker/best friend. insane, top tier i am so grossed out & stunned and impressed and thinking to myself in horror how they got away with the cannibal dakota joke in the original show that spawned this

Summary
Vinnie Dakota is dead. Has been dead.
You, of course, know this vividly. Knew it as he bled out in your arms, knew it as you reported it to Block. Knew it as you met with his sobbing mother and her hands banged against your chest, as if she hit you hard enough her boy would come back.
But love never saved anyone. You knew this as you held the love of your life in your arms and felt the death rattle shake his voice and chest like it did your babcia years ago.
Just another fic where Dakota is the one that dies and Cavendish goes back. Eventually. And the time in-between those two events.

OH MY GODDDDDD . OH MY GOD... fucking wow i have no words... i'm a sucker for second person fics first of all so 8 gajillion points for that but everything about this is so???beautiful??? heartshattering??? the families written for cav and dakota the .conversation with vin's mom about how she Knew he was from another timeline how she'd lost him twice. the way every single sentence is so deeply intertwined with so much love and care and implies So much about the lives they've lived outside of canon & outside of this fic.... i don't even know what to do with myself op i'm on my knees sobbing and wailing are you aware you wrote a fucking masterpiece. oh my gos

Summary
After years of friendship, it finally dawns on Cavendish that he feels something more. At the same time, he realizes everyone knew this before him.
He does the smart thing, of course, and run himself ragged trying to prove to himself wrong and stop any of these assumptions from making their way back to Dakota.
“I have been informed that some individuals –” He coughed. Milo brought out a handkerchief and Cavendish waved it away. “–have some assumptions about my feelings towards Dakota."
“Your feelings towards Dakota?” Milo tilted his head.
“Yes.”
“You mean love?” Cavendish sputtered.
“Well–”

phenomenal characterization!! i love and adore cav povs like this he is such a criminally underexplored character, especially seeing him bounce of all the rest of the cast!!! also sorry for spoilers but thjs line is making me scream and hurl
He feels like brittle bone and perhaps one breathy moan could shatter him into pieces, leaving him as the haunting presence of a man dead not through a broken heart but a heart so full he could have dropped to his knees and thanked a God long abandoned.

absolute masterwork in characterization they are both so obnoxious and annoying and truly i understand why they get along so well.... i particularly loved how dakota island was handled & how dakota confessed So early which explains a whole lot of why they are Like That in the show!!!

this is so silly excellent read. i particularly love how fluid the bounces between dialogue & prose are, it adds so much to the pacing and comedic timing it is wonderful
