A lovely balance of romance and plot, filled with the sort of intrigue and tension you find in a good crime procedural, with plenty of focus on the interpersonal relationships of the characters so that it doesn't fall victim the the dryness that detective oriented fiction can sometimes fall victim to. And the relationship between Charles and Erik, while they do have their hurdles to jump past, remains full of trust and comfort for one another. They're partners in multiple senses of the word, and ground each other the way that they deserve.

Part one is a beautiful story of young love in horrible circumstances, and shows the heroic, protective goodness at the heart of Erik's character. It gives off vibes very similar to New Mutants (one of the girls especially hardens back to Ilyana Rasputin, while still being her own character and a wonderful addition to the goings on at Hallow Hall) without all the production delays and disappointed fans of NM. The story is laced with pain and fear, while also giving you a sense of hope as you watch these kids fight for themselves and each other, and Charles and Erik find love and hope in a hopeless place.
Part two follows it beautifully. The characters cope with the pain of what they've lost in the best way they can, but only start to heal when they regain something they'd never imagined. Then together they grow and heal and flourish, with some beautifully handled tension along the way, leading up to a heartwrenching but wonderful epilogue and an ending only made bitter because it ends at all.
Despite the length, this story remains well paced and keeps you on your toes and eager to read the next chapter.
