Hell is other people. Purgatory is being a twenty something weatherman with the memories of a being a media overlord who had the entirety of Hell wrapped around his finger.
Sent back to his mortal life with a chance to "do it right this time", Vox has a problem. The Angels have installed a patch in his soul: the Pacifist Protocol. If he tries to kill a rival, poison a boss, or throw a punch, he is paralyzed by blinding agony.
He cannot claw his way to the top if he can't use his claws. He needs a loophole.

Vox finally stood, joints cracking in protest. Annoying. Stupid human body. “Look. All I know is we woke up like this. On Earth. Together. With all our memories and none of our powers. So, congratulations, deer boy, you’re stuck with me.”
Alastor pinched the bridge of his nose, inhaling sharply through his teeth. “Let me get this straight. I have been forcibly deposited into a mortal vessel, next to you, with no warning, no explanation, and no immediate means of escape?”
“That’s the gist,” Vox said.
Alastor stared at him.
Then laughed.
Or Alastor and Vox find themselves trapped in Purgatory with human bodies.

Summary
When he grabs Vox again, Vox doesn't come easy—he lashes out blindly with claws and rakes them across Val's cheek, opening a thin gash, and Val grunts as he seizes both of Vox's wrists with his two lower hands and takes hold of Vox's shoulders with his upper ones. Sparks prickle against his skin, sharp and biting, but Vox isn't trying to electrocute him—he's just vibrating like one large livewire, overloading just like the machine beside them.
"No—no, don't fucking—you can't—"
Vox struggles, jerking against Val's grip, breath coming in desperate, labored gasps. Val doesn't let go. Because that was never really the question, was it?
There is no world in which Val lets him go.
Or: Valentino handles Vox's crashout a little differently.

Summary
The silence in V Tower has become unbearable two weeks after the failed attack on Heaven. Vox knows his obsession with Alastor almost cost them everything, including his empire and his relationship with Valentino.
Swallowing his pride and shutting down his logic, Vox decides to go to Val's room to offer the only thing he has left: a sincere apology. He expects screaming, hitting, or indifference, but he isn't prepared for the confession Valentino has kept hidden amidst the smoke and rage.
(Or Vox and Val finally have the conversation they should have had a long time ago.)

He’s not really paying attention to what’s being said. He’s tired, nursing a gamy leg, and a hangover from the alcohol he forced down the night before to make said leg tolerable.
Anyone who claims that being an Overlord is easy is full of shit. This is his second time sitting at this table, finally dragging enough souls along in his shadow that they’d begun to notice him.

Trevor pushes away from him as if burnt, as if he doesn’t trust him anymore, and paces wildly around, blood dripping down his face and knuckles. From where Michael is lying, he hears Trevor make stuttering noises, the beginnings of sentences cut off by growls and curses. He’s so angry he can barely speak.
Eventually, Michael hears, “what the fuck was that, Michael?”
