    ”Evening, acrobat,” Barbara greeted, her voice dry but laced with warmth. The grainy connection did nothing to blunt the edge of her smile. “What happened to you, Romeo? Try flirting with someone who can actually throw a punch?”

    Dick’s grin snapped on like a reflex. He tilted his head, let his hair fall just so, and winked into the webcam. The movement jarred his still-healing shoulder and ribs, bandaged and stiff, and made his head throb. He was probably concussed. Only lightly… maybe.

    “You know me. Can’t resist a challenge.” The line landed too easily, too smooth. He leaned back a little, hoping Barbara didn’t notice the slight sway that followed. “Besides, you should see the other guy. Real charmer. I’d have asked for his number if he hadn’t been trying to cave my skull in.”

    Barbara arched an eyebrow. Even distorted by pixels, her expression carried unimpressed precision. “Uh-huh.”
