Summary
Eddie never had an issue with his relationship with Steve being kept a secret; he knew the dangers of the general public of Hawkins discovering good ol' golden boy Steve Harrington was dating Hawkins' resident freak. Besides, the most important person in his life outside of Steve, Wayne, knew and that was more than enough for Eddie. If Eddie was being honest anyways, he didn't know who Steve had to tell. The truth of the matter was that Eddie was completely fine with keeping his love for his Stevie pure and untainted by the hatred of his peers. But, he didn't realize that would mean hearing the love of his life died while drinking coffee and watching the morning news.
Or, six months of love goes up in flames when Steve dies in the Starcourt fire with Chief Hopper.

Max has heard incredibly stupid things from her group of absolutely idiotic friends, but this?
This takes the cake.
She looks up from the braid she’s currently creating in El’s now shoulder length hair and over at Mike who’s arms are crossed in front his chest, his lips turned downwards in it’s all too typical scowl (when he brings up things he thinks are important and no one else seems to believe it’s that big of a deal). Next to him is Dustin who, despite the loud Weird Al sweatshirt, is nodding sadly. Worry Max hasn’t seen since before El closed the gates, etched on his normally happy face.
To their credit, both Will and Lucas look up from the character sheets they were discussing just as confused as Max.
“You guys saw the bruises,” Mike says, the edge still there, but Max hears more concern than anything, “And, we asked Robin. She wouldn’t tell us anything—”
“Wouldn’t even deny it,” Dustin adds.

Steve accepted it years ago. It's not like he's going to stomp his feet and throw a tantrum demanding people to pay attention to him. OR: Eddie wakes up after top surgery to find an angel standing over him. He's not sure why, but he's definitely not going to ask questions, especially when the angel is calling him baby(!).

As he went to move back in his spot, hoping no one noticed his pause, he made eye contact with Eddie.
As if on cue, Steve shifted a bit. He was curled up, moving himself more on top of Eddie as he tucked his head in Eddie’s neck. Who knew that Steve was a koala when he slept?
Eddie raised a finger with a shush motion, fixing him a daring look. Dustin took the cue to lay back down, missing the look that Robin gave him.
When the movie was finally over, and Mike demanded they watch a trashy action movie, Dustin was the first to tell him to shut the fuck up.

It’s not that Steve doesn’t love him – Eddie is very lucky that Steve does love him, in fact, because Steve would otherwise have lost his patience about half an hour into this shit and ditched him to find his own ride home from the Halloween party.
And Steve had even liked Eddie’s choice of costume at first. He’ll admit that he hadn’t been super into Phantom of the Opera when they’d watched it—a little too theatrical to really be up Steve’s alley—but he’d definitely seen the appeal in Eddie’s Phantom costume.
Until the night of the party, when Eddie had decided to be, as previously mentioned, a fucking menace.
