Summary
Birthdays were typically a happy occasion. A mark of how far you’ve come, so how come Grian can’t help but panic at the thought of his own? It starts with a glance at the calendar. Harmless. Just a date—just a little square. But then the realization clicks-Next year. That cursed birthday. The one circled in thick red ink in his own planner, labeled Marriage Treaty.
Or,
Grian, a royal tied to a peace treaty signed four years ago. The very next year, he will be sent off to marry a prince from the neighboring kingdom, Aquatopia as part of the agreement. He and Aquatopia's prince have been exchanging letters... that Grian has decided was too much for him and passed the responsibility of answering said letters to his butler, Mumbo.

Summary
This wasn’t right. Nothing about this was right. Grian’s mind was running too quickly now, leaping to all sorts of conclusions on what might have happened to leave Mumbo’s apartment unlocked and unlatched and looking like this. Maybe he was abducted by aliens. Yes, that was a perfectly reasonable explanation supplied by Grian’s perfectly reasonable brain.
His undershirt was all at once too stiff and tight, clinging to his skin like a wetsuit. It was crushing his ribs, cutting off his ability to breathe.

In the small town of Boatem, everything is nice and neat in its routine. Grian runs the library and chats with the goofy history teacher on his lunch breaks. All is fine and nothing needs to change. And then Mumbo goes missing, and nothing is the same.
