Dan steps off the train, and in front of him, looking equally as dishevelled but somehow still the most beautiful thing Dan has ever seen, is Phil. He’s real, Dan thinks, stupidly, in utter disbelief that the person he’s been thinking of almost every waking moment for the past few months is right here. Phil smiles, a wide, crooked grin. “Dan!” he exclaims, stepping closer, bringing him into an all-consuming hug. It feels warm, hopeful, like a sigh of relief. It feels like the Phil he’s slowly fallen in love with. It feels familiar, somehow. Dan leans into it, wrapping his arms around Phil, too. He smells like cheap Lynx body spray, but it’s somehow the best thing Dan’s ever smelled. “Hi,” says Phil, so quiet it’s almost a whisper. He sounds nervous, too, which makes Dan feel a little bit better.

It's a social construct, it puts too many expectations on a relationship, it makes him feel trapped, it doesn't actually mean anything, and he does not need a flimsy paper to prove to somebody that he loves Phil. It's the epitome of everything he hates in society.
Oh, and this weird pile of feelings in the back of his brain that has been rapidly growing in size as of recent? Don't even worry about it.

Phil and Dan are made up of bits of each other, after all. They are a complicated puzzle so irrevocably fucked up that it could never be completed by another person, and that’s just how they like it.
