Viper’s voice cracks over the radio, suddenly sharp. “All aircrafts, this is no longer training. I repeat, this is no longer training. Here is Commander Viper from the US Navy. Disengage and identify yourselves immediately!”
“Break formation!” A voice, distinctly Russian, calls into the open line and they split like they already know where every threat in the sky is going to be.
“Bandits followed us,” the same voice says. Russian, cold, controlled, male. Then, with the kind of certainty that makes Goose’s stomach drops: “Holly Wood. Maverick. No engagement with locals until they are dealt with.”
Maverick blinks.
"Copy that, Iceman."

For years, the price on his head had pushed Caleb to hiding in forests, to keeping his head down and face masked in dirt as he flitted between derelict outskirt villages of the Empire- away from anyone who mighty have caught sight of the ransom posters that showcased his face, and the hefty sum of gold promised in reward for his return. Interest began to die, and Caleb dared to hope the worst of the ransom was behind him.
But when it's Mollymauk under Lorenzo's blade, seconds away from death- Caleb is faced with the weight of his past, and a damning decision.
There was only one choice, because he'd been foolish enough to get attached.
Lorenzo's attention sharpens into a hunger as he mentions it - one hundred thousand gold- and Caleb knows his days of running are over.

Fjord jerked up to the new voice, finding Molly leaning against the doorframe, his multi-colored coat wrapped tightly around his body. And nothing else, if the view of his bare legs meant anything. “I didn’t realize you were, uh. Out here.”
Fjord stared at Molly for a long moment, trying to process what he had just seen. Molly looked sheepish, a little flustered if the darker purple on his cheeks meant anything. His tail was down by his ankles, curling loosely around his left one. His arms were tight around his torso, holding his coat shut, and his red eyes were flicking nervously over Fjord, then down the hall where Caleb had gone.
Suddenly, a lot of things started to make more sense. Like Molly not going to a different room anymore. He’d rather run the risk of dealing with him over Nott any day.
Fjord doing his best when his roommate happens to be Mollymauk Tealeaf. And all that entails.

Essek came to the shelter simply hoping to be able to breathe again. He doesn't dream at being healed or reintroduced to society as if nothing happened. He just wants to be able to get through a whole day without worrying about a panic attack or nightmares plaguing his sleep, without recoiling from closeness and feigning arrogance instead of being open.
He can't even begin to imagine what must be going through Bren's mind, coming here for the third time in the last ten years. Why is he back if he's already been living on the outside for years now? Does anyone ever truly get their lives back? Or is it just people like Bren that fail to do so- people like Essek?
