“So,” Eiji says, once they’ve settled on the bench. “What is it that you needed to talk about?”
Ash knows how to take a punch. In a fight, it’s just inevitable--you’re going to get hit, and you have to learn how to withstand it if you’ve got even half a chance of staying on your feet. It was drilled into him, mercilessly--what to do when his head is spinning from a sharp blow to the jaw and lights are popping up bright before his eyes. And so looking into Eiji’s hopeful, expectant face, Ash does as he’s been taught. Swallows down hard against the nausea, breathes out as fully as he can to take the edge off, and harshly commands himself not to lose consciousness. Just like in a fight, it’s the only way he’s got a shot at getting through this in one piece.
“I’m not staying.”
Believing he brings Eiji nothing but pain and suffering, Ash goes to Japan to try to end things between them. Eiji has several things to say on the matter.

Summary
“They tortured you,” Eiji says, his voice hardly above a whisper.
“Eiji, I mean it--it looks about a million times worse than it really is. I bruise like a peach. Always have.”
Eiji’s expression changes slightly, from pain to puzzled curiosity.
“You bruise like a peach?” he repeats, as if trying the phrase on for size. “I’ve never heard that expression before.”
Ash’s shoulders relax without him meaning to. It’s much easier to discuss silly idioms than it is to watch Eiji worry himself on account of Ash.
“Yeah, you know, because peaches are so soft that they bruise easy. It’s just an English saying.”
Eiji smiles.
“It makes sense,” he says, nodding. “And I like it. It fits, for you to be a peach. You’re both so sweet.”
Ash can’t help it--he barks out a sharp, startled laugh.
“I’m a lot of things, Eiji. Sweet isn’t one of them.”
In which wounds are treated, in more ways than one.

Summary
Eiji moved through his stretches with the kind of grace that seemed impossible for someone so unassuming. His tank top was damp, clinging to his skin in a way that outlined the slender muscles of his back, the curve of his shoulders.
Sweat darkened the fabric, made it almost translucent where it stuck, and Ash hated himself for noticing. Hated himself more for the way his gaze caught on the strip of skin where the hem had ridden up, revealing the smooth, unblemished curve of Eiji’s lower back.
And those shorts—God, those stupid, too-small shorts.
