Summary
Thomas is dead, Aldo reminds himself, with another surge of unhinged grief. Aldo was the one who found the body, who spoke the eulogy, and threw the first handful of dirt over the coffin. He knows that Thomas is dead—and certainly not risen from his grave and wandering around Vatican City, no matter what ridiculous conspiracy theories Giulio and Ray were spouting about demons and vampires and other fantastical creatures that anyone with sense, even in the Church, had long since stopped believing in.
He feels his eyes fill up with tears. “God, Thomas,” he whispers. “I miss you so much.”
The last word is barely out of his mouth when an impossibly powerful force jerks him around and throws him against the wall. Aldo gasps with pain, the breath knocked out of him, and something moves up behind him, sandwiching him against the cool plaster. It feels almost like a body, except that there's no warmth or scent or sound of breath, just a room temperature block of flesh pressing against him. He can feel the long line of buttons from a traditional cassock poking into his spine.
"Hi, Aldo," Thomas breathes. “I missed you, too.”
