Summary
Grian scoffs, "Yeah, cause we have all the reason in the world to trust you." Grian's body trusts him — his mind doesn't, has no reason to see him as anything but a dangerous foe, one that has killed him multiple times at this point, but his heart rate calms at his presence, his fight or flight dulls to a whisper, his hypervigilance focuses in on an us. Protect us, it screams out, no care in the world for protecting him from Scar.
Scar trots further into the room, "Exactly! I've done so much for you guys, I even kept you safe during your whole sleepy episode."
"Right, and you did such a good job at that. Remind me, how many times did you blow me up? Two? Three? I wasn't exactly around to keep count."
"Sure, sure, I didn't say there weren't… imperfections. A little TNT here and there may have gotten misplaced along the way. But my goals were as noble as can be."
(In which Scar preens Grian during a storm, and the world ticks along as per usual)

"Oh jeez. Sorry about that folks. Oh wow — testing, testing, 1, 2, 3 — Hey, these things are really cool, very professional."
Grian is hit by two things: first, the American accent, second, a wave of indignation.
Because as she glances over, a pit of dread sinks its way into her stomach. A foretelling of oncoming doom, comparable to any conventional omen.
Because sitting propped up on a stool in the centre of the raised platform that doesn't quite constitute a stage, is a woman. A woman with an acoustic guitar. Which can only mean one thing. The volume of the backing sound system dies down, gone are the slightly wheezy indie rock hits, preparing for whatever horrors a woman in a pub with an acoustic guitar who hasn't experienced bloody microphone feedback before has in store for them.
(in which Gem bets Grian she can set her up with a girlfriend, three lesbians and one bisexual bitch at a pub and Grian meets Scar, an encounter that's very incidental and definitely won't alter the future trajectory of her life)
Part of a series, but it's a prequel so can (and maybe should?) be read first.

Summary
It is frustratingly easy to get into the swing of life in the human world.
There'd be something thrillingly vindicating if despite all his words and platitudes, there was nothing Mumbo could actually do to fit into human society.
It would also have been really, really convenient.
The two of them would get ousted from this strange, small group of young adults who had taken it upon themselves to adopt two random stragglers into their number. The joy, whimsy and curiosity would be crushed from Mumbo's soul, he wouldn't be able to hold a job and make new friends due to the devastatingly crushed soul thing. Blah, blah, blah. The two of them would have no choice but to work together to find a way back to the Otherworld. All in all, it would be wins across the board for Lizzie.
Alas, instead, Grian's still not evicted Mumbo from his sofa and Lizzie now attends Tuesday board game night.
It's bullshit!!!!

Summary
Sabrina Scarpenter is one of the most notoriously heterosexual pop stars there is, her most popular songs quite literally being about her relationships with men and associated "escapades".
Despite this, there's a niche conspiracy theory online convinced that this is all a front and she is actually sending covert signals to her most dedicated fans that she's in reality been a lesbian all along.
Grian thinks this is frankly bullshit and is going to prove these fans wrong once and for all.

Summary
The bruise spreading across Grian’s face was swollen red, bound to darken into a black eye. He’d taken the blow like a champ, blinking away tears with a grimace like he’d swallowed a lemon slice, and he had bags under his eyes, clothes that weren’t his favorite sweaters or his uniform.
Scar couldn’t take his eyes off him. If Scar spoke right now, with his hand burning from the impact, it wouldn’t come out very smoothly, would it? Not the least bit reassuring, and if anyone needed reassurance, it was his friend here. He schooled his face, reminded himself where the words would have to start inside his mouth to come out clear.
Having to remind himself he was allowed to speak without prompting was definitely not a bad sign, and he didn’t mind it in the least.

"Good game," Grian rasps behind him, a lamb's-eared echo of Scar's own ghostly thoughts. "That's a wrap, then, huh."

Scar studies him. Glances at the feathers curtaining his view of the throne room's entrance, then slides his gaze back to Grian's dancing eyes. Fighting a losing battle is difficult enough; fighting one you've lost before it's even begun is impossible. "Yeah, alright," he says, resigned to the tendrils of fondness cinching thorny vines around his heart. "Let's hear it."
Another flash of teeth, dyed red in the light spilling through Grian's feathers. "The 'Not A Resistance' Resistance," he says, low and teasing, "would like to cordially invite you to kiss me stupid." He lets that simmer in the shred of air between them before tacking on, measured and thoughtful: "This is a time-sensitive invitation, by the way, so you should figure out your answer in the next ten to fifteen seconds."
