“How do I know?” The kid spits, knife raised again, trembling violently. His eyes are wet, angry and pleading and piercing right down into Grian’s soul.
“...If I can fly?” Grian asks, confused. His heart is beating fast.
The boy shakes his head violently, taking a lurching step forward, now only a few feet away. Something about his eyes almost seems familiar, but the thought is fleeting. The knife looks sharp. The child is crying, slow tears that barely have an effect on his voice.
“No,” the kid says forcefully. “How do I know you’re not a zombie?”
OR,
A young Scar fresh from a world overtaken by zombies stumbles through The Rift onto Hermitcraft, and is quickly adopted by the rest of the Hermits, who have no idea who he actually is.

He wasn’t in love with the guy. Some wires had gotten crossed, is all. Adrenaline, fear, elation, anger, pain… all of it had coalesced into a miasma of emotions that swirled around in his chest in the aftermath of destroying the time-ripper and had latched on to the only other solid thing around. That thing just happened to be Wade Wilson.
He’d been in enough fucked up situations to know that near death experiences tended to mess with the brain for a bit. They made people do reckless shit like confess their secrets, fuck people they shouldn’t, even declare their sudden and undying love.
It was chemical and it was psychological. It wasn’t real.
The feeling would pass.
He just needed some time.

The beauty of it is not the surprising part. It's not even that he spent the better part of the day eating dirt or leaves or shovels. No, the strangest thing on the mountain is the people. The strangest thing about them is that they're there at all. With Scar. On purpose.
He can't quite figure it out. The why of it. Jimmy had made it look so easy to say he would stay, like he couldn't think of a million reasons not to. And then Lizzie, who he had invited, and then still been surprised to see her there when he got back. They do it without obligation. Scar had almost forgotten what that felt like.

Sure the Canary takes him seriously when no one else does and laughs at his jokes and has these bright brown eyes that light up when he figures out how to escape Tango's traps and... and Tango might, just maybe, like the Canary more than he thought.

Tango thought this was what it must feel like to an overworlder to get burned.
Of course, he couldn't be burned, but he paid the price for that in the agony spreading right now, blooming over his chest and weeping down his stomach, white-hot pain that seared into his skin and dug its claws against his flesh. They'd just arrived today, a new commission from a big-name noble, a chance for Zed to showcase his skills and make the leap from mass-quantity work into the fine-tuned artistry he loved. He'd been with Zed for three months, he believed in the man and the gentle promises he'd made to ensure Tango never faced the same suffering that'd defined his ten years living in this sick system in the overworld again. He believed in those promises. He truly did.
But he was hurting right now. Getting ridiculed and insulted, with water that burned soaking into his clothes, and Zed was nowhere to be found.
He'd endure, though. Even still, he couldn't bear to cause Zed any trouble.{In which Tango tries to beat back a headspace relapse with a stick, Zed guilt-trips himself into a tizzy, and broken promises have a bit of nuance to them, after all.}
