“Are you kidding me?” Tommy interrupts. “You’re both going to sit there and ignore me after whatever the hell that was?”
“Well, you were doing such a good job with all the ignoring you were doing earlier that I just had to give it a go myself,” Eddie says snarkily. “How’d I do?”
Tommy sputters.
“You tell him, bro!” a voice calls out from a few rows back, and Buck snorts out a laugh.
It draws Tommy’s attention, unfortunately.
“You think this is funny?” Tommy asks, towering over them both. “Cheating on me right in front of my face?"
"Does it really count as cheating?" the woman beside Eddie mutters, looking away hastily when Tommy glares at her.

Buck smiles at him, so at least Eddie can still do one thing right.
That feeling lasts through their next call, and the next, and then it all goes to hell.
It’s a call at a church, which feels a little on the nose. Some kid crawled onto the roof through the bell tower; Buck is harnessed up there and getting the kid down.
Eddie is on the ground. Buck’s foot slips.

Summary
Buck sits up, and pushes away the shyness that creeps in, when he goes to take his socks off. Reveals his toes, and the lavender polish that’s covering each nail. His heart swells when he sees them.
He chances a glance at Eddie, and his smile is something fond, and Buck’s not exactly sure what he was hoping for, but this at least isn’t bad.
Eddie looks up at him, cradles his face, and says, “Very pretty, baby.”
Or: Buck gets his toes done, and feels something new because of it. Things go from there.

After a pause, Eddie asked, “You ever think about just… keeping it going?”
Buck blinked. “What, like living together forever?”
A snort filled the air, and Eddie looked half amused and half serious. “I dunno, maybe? Something like that. I mean, look, it’s a new year, right? Anything could happen. But neither of us wanna be alone forever. So, maybe if we’re both still single in a year or whatever, we could just—” he waved a hand vaguely, like he was lassoing the future— ”make it official.”
“Official?” he echoed, head even fuzzier now.
Eddie’s mouth twitched. “Yeah, we could just get married, or something close enough to it."
Buck’s heart tripped over itself.
On New Year's Eve, Buck and Eddie made a drunken pact: if they were both still single in a year, they'd marry each other. They didn't mean to start sabotaging the other's love life to make it happen, but somewhere along the way, that's exactly what they ended up doing.
Now the only question is... how far are they willing to take it?

Bobby would not approve of Buck's thoughts right now. Buck doesn't even approve of his own thoughts right now and he once ate out a woman after another dude came in her. But it's different when it's one of your favorite people in the world and his wife who you like a lot. Isn't it?

It’s been over two months of chasing Buck across the country, from state to state to state, following a trail he suspects Buck doesn’t realize he’s dropping breadcrumbs on. If he did, Eddie worries he’d stop sending the postcards, and they’re his only clues. Buck left his phone in his apartment back in Los Angeles. If he’s gotten a new one, he hasn’t shared the number with anyone—not Maddie, not Chris, and certainly not Eddie.
So Eddie lays in a too-soft bed in a too-small cabin in the middle of bumfuck Nebraska, the first grey light of dawn creeping its fingers past the dusky pink curtains, and reads the postcard again. He knows what it says by heart, but it makes him feel a little less alone to hear Buck’s voice in his head.

Eddie is grinning as he reaches back to use the suds to style his hair into an exaggerated mohawk, twisting in his chair to pull faces at his son, and Buck admits to himself that maybe his job is pretty fucking important.

Eddie does his best to keep his face neutral. Internally, he’s tamping down on some incredibly unbecoming jealousy. Eddie doesn’t really want to hear Buck go on about how much he’d rather be fucking Tommy right now than talking to him. To avoid hurting his own feelings with any follow-up questions, Eddie just nods stiffly and says “Ah. Right.”
“Right,” Buck echoes awkwardly. “So anyways—”
“I could help,” Eddie says at the same time, wincing at the stunned silence that follows Buck’s aborted sentence.

In which incredibly poor communication leads Eddie to suggest phone sex to help Buck get over his apparently unrequited feelings for Tommy, which Buck accepts because he thinks Eddie has realized he's in love with him and feels bad he can't reciprocate so he's offering this as a consolation prize.

“It’s yours,” Eddie had finally said, looking down at it for a moment before handing the phone to him. “I… There’s a lot of stuff you might want to go through on there.”
Buck frowned, confused, but when he looked down at the screen, he saw it.

“A lot of people used it as a… A way to communicate with you while you were gone.”
Eddie’s voice was tense. Buck couldn’t stop staring, reading the top message from Eddie over and over again, the only one that he could see. It didn’t make sense.
“You don’t have to go through it all but… We missed you, ba– Buck.” Buck slowly looked up from his phone, and there was that look again. Eddie had reached out, the same way he had when Buck came back, fingers brushing across his face gently. Buck wanted to melt into it. He did, later, but in that moment, he had to keep himself together.
“I want to.”
“Okay,” Eddie’s hand had dropped. Buck’s skin felt cold. “Come get me when you’re done.”

Buck gets blipped. Eddie's left behind. A love story told through what Eddie did in his absence.
