  1. Summary

Throughout their lives, Zim and Dib have been enemies. Sworn and destined. What goes on between them to keep it that way? What if something changed? What if they weren't just destined enemies, but destined everything? Partners? Friends? Lovers? Here's a story for you. One based solely on the two of them. No complications.
    --
Their lives were tangled together now--so much so that when he tried to pin down the moment when the individual threads of their fates had become so irrevocably knotted together it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began. The only way to separate them now would be by the knife; a violent hacking at their codependent union. And there would be no recovering from it afterwards. Once maybe they could have survived the agony of being parted, there would have been a slim chance that they could have walked away with nothing but ugly scars. In this moment, he knew their separation would mean unstaunchable blood.

I snort. "Yeah, got me there. I'm old, okay? Just give me a second."

A handful of moments pass. Then, "How old, question?" Rocky asks.

I open my mouth, and then I realize exactly what I just walked into.

Or: Grace and Rocky and a small conversation about lifespans.

    Summary

“How long do humans live for, question. Rocky want to know.”

Rocky stamps his claw impatiently on the flat surface of his xenonite ball as he asks, a skittery, jittery movement that rattles in Ryland’s ears.

He sighs. Rubs at his temples. Thinks about how to answer this as diplomatically as physically possible, as at ease as physically possible.

It’s not that he cares much about the fact he’ll be dead long long before Rocky. He doesn’t care about that. He’s probably going to die a whole lot sooner than your average human, anyway, considering his diet of coma-slurry and Taumoeba and little else. Besides, he’s been in space for longer than anybody has been in the history of ever. That’s sure to do messed-up things to his bones and joints and mass and everything. But it doesn’t matter. He’s made peace with that. For-real made peace, because any time more is a thousand times over what he thought he’d get.

What does matter is that Rocky has no idea that there’s probably only about fifty years left in his tank.

    Summary

Ryland Grace is Not Doing Well.

He’s consulted a medical textbook. He’s definitely malnourished, as expected, but he also thinks he might have scurvy, which is. Uh.

He’s attempting to make light of it. Well. He’s attempting not to make anything of it at all. They only have what, ten more days until they reach Erid? And once they’ve got to Erid, Rocky has reassured him, told him again and again and again that the best minds on Erid will fix him, will work out a way to feed him, that they’ll help.

So he just has to make it through those ten more days. With scurvy. No big deal. Who hasn’t lived with scurvy before? If he thinks real hard about it, he’s just a pirate, at the end of the day. A space pirate. A space pirate who pillaged another planet for their resources and has now got scurvy as a form of divine retribution for crimes against Taumoeba (eating it) and Astrophage (getting Taumoeba to eat it.)

He’s Jack Sparrow. What the hey, sure.
