“Boyfriend,” Naruto wails.
Sasuke steps forward. Sakura meets his eyes (widening slightly—surprise. Crinkling a little—something pleased, welcoming. Widening again—asking what to do. Sasuke sometimes thinks that no matter where in the world he finds himself cast by the winds, he will always know how to read two sets of eyes: one green, one blue.) in askance, and he tilts his head. Give him a moment.
“Yes, boyfriend,” Sakura says.
Naruto finally looks up. His cheeks are still stained pink, eyes bright, blue. “Do you really think he’d want to?”
Sakura stares at him for a long moment. Ino, across from her, looks similarly thunderstruck.
Evidently, neither of them were prepared for having to explain to Naruto that his vibrant, too-obvious affection for Gaara (of all people) was returned just as earnestly. Sasuke gets it, kind of, in that it’s really not the kind of thing that needs explaining, but like.
It’s Naruto. He’s an idiot. They should have expected this.
“Yes,” Sasuke says, making his presence known to his best friend. “He has terrible taste. Obviously.”

Aaron just rolls his eyes. “All right, then. Speedrun time.”
Neil blinks. “What?”
Aaron ignores this, instead counting off on his fingers. “Your mother’s burnt corpse is somewhere in California, you’ve had a hard-on for Kevin since you were ten, you’ve had more names than Andrew’s had cavities—”
Neil claps his hand right over Aaron’s terrible mouth. There’s panic rising in his throat. Anger too, maybe.
“Shut up,” Neil says, and Aaron shoots him a flat look, whispering something. The movement of his lips brushes at Neil’s palm, tingling so much it’s almost a type of pain.
He knows better than to move his hand, especially if Aaron said what he thinks he said, but. He has to know. So he does.
“Abram,” Aaron says again, so quietly, eyes steady on Neil’s, the only steady things in the universe as the world tilts beneath Neil’s feet.
What the fuck, Neil thinks. What the fuck.
Aaron and Neil find themselves caught in a time loop.

“You,” Kevin says. It’s half a gasp. Aaron nods, raising one finger. It bolsters Kevin to see it, so he scrambles around for more. “The balcony. Riko. The French press. Your shitty sneakers.”
Aaron, with four fingers raised, quietly says, “Riko’s not here, Kevin.”
“What?” Kevin looks at him wildly. He blinks, trying to steady his gaze. Fuck. Okay. Yeah. Fuck. Aaron. He’s here with Aaron, which means Riko can’t be here, because they’ve never met. They belong to two different spheres of his life. “Uh. Your eyes.”
“I don’t think you’re meant to say me for three out of your five objects,” Aaron says, but his ears are tinging pink again. Kevin is endlessly fascinated by it.
Kevin Day makes a comeback.

Jean looks at him, and swallows. “Soldier?”
Jeremy smiles, small and bashful and with just a peek of teeth. Jean resists the urge to poke at his canines. “Y’know, wounded soldier, coming back from war,” he says, then bumps their shoulders together, gesturing down at his knee. “You hurt your knee, right?”
“Does that make you the loyal wife awaiting his return from the war?” Allison asks archly, glancing over from Renee, Dan and Seth to look at Jeremy.
Jean doesn’t think he can cope with an answer to that question, so he quickly says to Jeremy, “Sort of.”
Jean gets a mysterious injury, Jeremy is distracted, Katelyn is shipping, Allison is scheming and Kevin just wants to study for their midterm. The rest of the Foxes also have opinions, obviously.

When Madara awoke, he had expected darkness.
Caught off guard on a mission gone awry, injured, and trapped in a blizzard, he had been easy pickings for a party of Hagoromo Kekeii Genkai traders. Though he put up a fight, it was ultimately useless. He was poisoned, his eyes taken, and then left to bleed out in the snow. He had expected death at best, and blindness at worst.
He had not expected to wake up in his clan's medical ward, eyes still fixed in his skull, healed, and with a fresh soul mark on his cheek.

"Sakura-chan, she's threatening me!"
Sasuke was supposed to be Naruto's right hand man in this matter. He was plenty helpful on their way up here, hacking down the thorned vines that tried to attack them and cutting up the various beasts and creatures that stood in their path. He left to hang out with the horses in the stables the second after Naruto requested a toothbrush. Nope, he had said, and now Naruto is defenseless. Nervous and defenseless. Maybe Sakura will protect him.
"Naruto, I'm about three seconds away from knocking your head myself." Sakura won't protect him from shit. "Unless you want Gaara to remain in this deep sleep for the next forever-number of centuries, a true love's kiss is the only thing that's going to wake him."
Naruto's face goes hot at the implication. His insides feel like a firework exploding in every direction, but by some miracle he manages to maintain his composure.
