Abu Dhabi ‘24, the race where their supposed rivalry finally bubbles over the precipice. It's rough, messy, all the things you’d expect after years of yearning. But most of all it leaves Charles feeling like the love he has held dear to his chest all those years is shared, no longer unrequited. However when he wakes the next morning Max is nowhere to be found. A ghost of a memory. Charles spends winter break plotting how to bring Max back to him.

Oscar was an alpha, everyone treated him like one at least. “too stoic to be a beta” that was a narrative he’d gotten used to seeing online. “Too broad and quiet to be an omega” okay that one hurt a bit more but it wasn’t the worst thing ever said about him. Now years into the sport and with no one bothering to question him on his second gender, Oscar never felt the need to correct anyone. If they thought he was an alpha then that’s who he would be. It works well, until it doesn’t.

He only saw Charles after the wedding from his door. Charles’s room is right across from Lando’s. It’s for Carlos’s convenience. Dividing your time and space between two omegas can be a hassle, you know. From the wide open door as Carlos left, he saw Charles watch Carlos go, his legs hanging from the bed’s edge. He just caught a glimpse, but the fresh bite, in all its glory: dried blood and aggressive swelling, was noticeable from a distance. Charles winced as he smiled at Carlos; he looked like he was in pain. But all he remembers thinking is, God, they were right. He’s devastatingly beautiful.
