Robby had never been one to believe in fate.
Miracles, maybe. There had been the occasional rare case, outcomes the textbooks couldn’t explain. Likely good medicine and human resilience defined through divinity. But still, he could believe in miracles. Even just to believe in something.
But not fate. Until he met Dennis Whitaker.
Dennis Whitaker had always seemed to believe in fate. In God’s plan, a path already forged for him to follow, everything in his life having a purpose, a reason. The belief had faded when he’d left Nebraska, as many things had.He had thought that if anything would return his belief in fate, in the divine, it might be working in the ED. Saving patients, witnessing miracles. The worst days of people’s lives, the moment God would step in and shield his sheep from the wolves.
Dennis had been wrong. The ED didn’t return his belief.
He found himself believing in Dr. Robby.

Summary
Dennis recounted all of this on the rooftop every morning, almost like a prayer. How he’d gotten here. It wasn’t a sudden morning, waking up with the realization that God had abandoned him. It was slow, painful. Of feeling farther and farther from the light, of drifting away wordlessly from the only truth he’d ever known. There was no moment where it hit that he didn’t believe anymore. It just was.
Dennis had never been able to escape the ghost of Nebraska. But maybe with some confessions and newfound belonging, he finally could.

So when she’s knocked out of Wimbledon by a 17 year-old, coached by Jack, of course- Samira thinks it can’t get worse. Then he’s named head coach of Team USA for the Paris Olympics.
