She remains silent for too long. Cold metal tendrils reach out, wrapping around her wrists, tugging her closer. "Zlatíčko," the Queen says, pulling Ludmila close enough for her back to press against a metallic form, all while more tendrils come to wrap around her waist — a mockery of a lover's embrace. "You are here."
A pause.
Ludmila sucks in a breath through her teeth.
"I am."
A hum, like the buzzing of static. "You do not want to be."
"I—" She exhales sharply. "It is not that I do not—"
"There is no point lying," the Queen interjects, smoothly. There is no anger to her voice, no hatred, no resentment. There is only something calm, underlaid with a certainty that makes Ludmila shudder. "It matters not. You are here, and here you will stay."
She does not reply.

Summary
Olethra is a keen learner, that is for sure. She is enthusiastic with a curiosity that far surpasses anything Marya has seen before — far beyond her own sky-eyed wonder at the marvellous world of aviation that Comfrey MacLeod had introduced her to as a teenager, and Ludmila's stunned amazement when Marya, herself, had later brought her aboard the Kingfisher. She throws herself into every task Marya assigns her with a diligence that contradicts everything Marya has come to know about her, meticulously asking questions and taking notes whenever Marya leads her around the vessel and instructs her on the ins and outs of a skyship.
It is just—
The issue is not so much Olethra as it is Marya. To put it as simply as possible, Marya doubts she is a good mentor at all.
Or: 5 times Marya felt like an incompetent mentor, and the 1 time her protégés ganged up on her to prove her wrong.

Summary
Right now, Ludmila watches as Marya leans against the jamb, crossing her arms as she smiles. The contentment radiates off of her like sunlight. Ludmila's gaze traces the faint wrinkles etching the corners of Marya's eyes and is reminded, with a pang, of how much older Marya has grown in their decades and centuries apart.
"Your shoes," she finally says. She arches a finger at Ludmila's boots, strewn about. "Take one of them, the better one. Polish it and leave it out, alright?"
She blinks.
"You want me to... what?"

Summary
"I could not just stand by and watch you get shot—"
A frustrated hiss. "Marya," Ludmila says, before she stops. There is a moment, during which Marya feels the sensation of thread being tugged upon, closing the wound, before Ludmila stands up, pushing back the chair she has been sitting on. It drags across the ground, making an awful screech that grates at Marya's ears.
"Marya," Ludmila tries again, coming to sit beside her, the mattress dipping under her weight. Reaching out to grab Marya's hands, intertwining their fingers together. "If you love me, then please stop trying to die for me."
Stitching up a wound alongside a much needed conversation.

Something is tugging at her. Like metal talons closing around her limbs, dragging her down, down, down. It is impossible to move. It is difficult to breathe. Her heart beats too fast, unsteady; her breathing shallows, raspy and guttural in her heaving lungs.
It hurts. It hurts.
And she is so, so cold.
There is a hole in Marya’s hand. Forgotten about, left to fester; is it so surprising, then, that it has gotten infected?

mind the tags, but i have also tagged a lot out of an abundance of caution <3this was supposed to be short, and it was also supposed to be posted xmas day, and i'm zero for two. however! this is probably one of the things i'm most pleased with that i've written all year. genuinely absolutely thrilled to have gotten ell for my giftee, big thanks to HerkimerAurora for letting me drop snips in their DMs because i could not drop as many in the marmila server as usual, and *also* for helping me narrow down the initial idea!
i kicked around "golden heart is bad actually" months ago and it has lived in my prompts list ever since, with me occasionally eyeing it and then deciding i didn't have the right ideas. well. i happened to get the exact right person to send the ideas spinning, and it uhhhh got a little out of hand!

But as the only 'normal' one in the group, Riz finds himself the center of alot of pent-up anxieties. AKA: Riz is the only short-life mortal on the team, and everyone is projecting a bit.
