    Summary

    “Actually, Yama,” Kaname says. “I know it shouldn’t be your responsibility, but would you mind keeping this a secret?” He holds his hands pressed together in front of him in a pleading gesture, bashfully closing one eye and peering at Yamada imploringly with the other.

    The worst people who could find out already know, Yamada thinks, so he isn’t sure how bad it would be if it got out to the others. But this is the General asking him for a favor. Who is Yamada to refuse? He glances back at Kiyomine, who isn’t paying attention. “I don’t mind at all,” he smiles. “I’ll make sure the rest of the team doesn’t find out.”

    “Ah,” Kaname interjects, his face dropping slightly in realization. “I mean to keep it from me. The other me who doesn’t remember.”

    Or, in which the team learns something new about the relationship between their battery, and Yamada has a secret to protect.

    Todo makes a thoughtful sound, and Yamada is genuinely becoming concerned that Todo is putting more brain cells into this than his schoolwork.

    Chihaya laughs. “Maybe that’s why his catching position is so stable.”

    “There are other options besides cowgirl!” Todo argues.

    Is it going to become commonplace to have to hear speculation about his teammates’ sex lives? Yamada is having trouble remembering why he ever respected these people.

    Summary

    Sunday morning, when the Commander’s skills had mostly become Kei’s, and he started showing up pale, washed out, and translucent as an acetate sheet, he said, “Aren't you curious? I can tell you how it happens."

    “How it happens?"

    The Commander nodded, with papal patience. “Yes. How you, Kaname Kei-san," a smile slanted his mouth, "become me."

    (Or: Thirteen memories that Kaname Kei, having merged with the Commander, urge him to recall instead of that Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.)

    The truth, though he’d never say, was that Kaname Kei had fallen in love with the way Kiyomine Haruka looked at him like he wasn’t a false prophet.

    Mei shoots him a withering glare. “You got any more bright ideas?”

    “Just one.” Miyuki smiles at him ruefully, his gaze searching. “Do you trust me?”

    This is absolutely everything I can't even breathe, oh my god, perfect writing, perfect au, just perfect for my miyumei heart I'm ECSTATIC. One of my favs for all time.

    //
    But Mei isn’t done. “Normally, I wouldn’t have bothered if it wasn’t—” He breaks off midway, his jaw clicking shut with the desire to suppress the rest.

    If it wasn’t you. Miyuki swallows, his ribcage suddenly full of those invisible wisps and their intangible effects. “Well. Here I am.”

    “Yeah,” Mei replies, uncharacteristically soft. “Here you are.”
    //

    It’s at this moment that Miyuki finds his footing. “I wanted you to hate me, Mei,” he tells him, plaintive and unimportant.

    Mei pauses, no, freezes, every line of his posture seized and tense. The air supply that fueled his anger sputters out. Slowly, he turns to the side so that Miyuki can trace the sneer that unfurls along one corner of his mouth. “Well,” he says. “You don’t get that.”

    It would have hurt less, Miyuki thinks later, if Mei had just decked him.

    //
    “I meant,” Sawamura says, brushing aside Miyuki’s cheekiness with valiant restraint, “when you called Narumiya-san your partner.”

    Miyuki’s first instinct is to tell Sawamura not to bother with the honorifics when it comes to Mei. The respect wouldn’t go both ways in this case. But he chokes it down in favor of what he actually wants to know. “What about it?”

    It’s uncanny how a pensive Sawamura is more of an upheaval than the one who barrels into every space and befriends allied and enemy ability users like they’re collectible toys. But that’s what Miyuki gets, Sawamura with his voice low and careful, as if he’s arranged his next words instead of blurting them into the ether. “I just thought you looked pretty happy doing it. That’s all.”

    An uneven pounding rises into his chest from his stomach. “I was just trying to bait him,” Miyuki says. The excuse rings hollow even to him. “I do it to you guys all the time.”

    Sawamura’s gaze flattens in the twilight, shredding through Miyuki’s circular thinking like he’d used his claws. “Yeah,” he replies. “You do it for different reasons, though.”

    Miyuki could retort, could dredge up any of the million and one jibes he has stashed in his head. But what washes over him is a resignation that doesn’t feel like defeat. Not when everyone here understands him better than he’d anticipated, and a single term he dropped without thinking could be used to challenge him so effectively. Kuramochi and the others must have been letting him get away with quite a lot.

    In any case, Nabe probably knows. Rei definitely does. Nothing escapes Haruichi. If Furuya calls him out on it, Miyuki is going to have to retire.

    //

    This isn’t how it’s supposed to go. Usually Mei is the one who yanks Miyuki toward him when his impatience hits its peak. Miyuki always plays along, safe in the illusion that if he isn’t reaching then he’s not risking anything.

    But tonight he has no use for the facade they put on even when they’re alone. There’s just him and his selfishness, no need to sugarcoat it. He can’t bring himself to ask; he doesn’t think he’d survive the answer. So he’ll take. He’ll take this for what it could have been, then remove himself from the equation and let Mei linger in the spotlight where he belongs.

    “God, Kazuya,” Mei replies, shaky and dazed. “If you wanted me this badly, you should’ve just said.” There’s a question in there, the same one he’s been silently asking for months. But for once, Miyuki doesn’t pretend not to notice it.

    “Yeah.” He curls his hand around Mei’s nape and grazes the warmth underneath. “I really do.” He bridges the last centimeter himself.

    //

    “Because you were able to nullify them,” Mei surmises. He zeroes in on the motion of Miyuki’s hands as he explains. “Must be nice never having to do anything.”

    Miyuki flexes his wrists like a warm-up, a shift in tempo. “Guess I was blessed with beauty and brains,” he replies. “You’re free to be the brawn.”

    “Sure,” Mei agrees. He lifts his chin, his hair radiant in the midafternoon. “But I’ve also got the looks.”

    “You really think that?” Miyuki asks carelessly, not exactly disagreeing.

    Mei’s response is a swift lob straight at him. “Don’t you?”

    “Okay,” Shirakawa says with a trace amount of revulsion. “How about you two just…not.”

    Mei scowls at him, but Itsuki intervenes before it sparks an argument. “Mei-san, maybe we should concentrate on what’s going on now.”

    “Bossy as usual,” Mei grumbles. It’s the biggest bit of hypocrisy made to date, but Itsuki takes it in stride.

    Summary

    Distrust was within the limit of expectations. As a high profile pro hero, Hawks knew there would be some form of hazing before he was allowed to associate further with the League of Villains. He just didn’t expect it to be this.

    “Awfully quiet there, birdie. Got a lot going on in that pretty head of yours?”

    Hawks’ breath hitches in the back of his throat when the weight on the mattress beside him shifts. A body leans over him, hot air ghosting over his ear.

    “I don’t remember saying you could think.”

    “God, please…”

    “Hmm? God? That’s not my name,” Dabi replies, amused. “But I don’t dislike it. If I’m your god, little birdie, you should treat me like one. Respect me. Worship me.”
