He’s just about ready to doze off—his ritualistic pre-dinner, thirty-minute nap—when, suddenly, Ilya says, “Huh. Interesting.”
Shane cracks one eye open. “Hmm?”
“Oh, nothing, малыш,” he replies, though his brows are furrowed when he says it. Shane’s even more curious now.
“No, really, what is it?”
Ilya must lose some internal debate; a deep sigh leaves his body before, wordlessly, he turns his phone to Shane.
The bright light makes him squint, still not used to Ilya and his affinity for both using the light-mode feature and turning the brightness in his phone to a maximum. He forgoes scolding him when, after his eyes have adjusted, he reads: Metros acquires Fil-Canadian Rivera; second Asian player in franchise history after Hollander.
At first he thinks, oh, that’s my name. Shane hasn’t seen his name mentioned remotely near the words ‘Montreal Metros’ ever since he transferred to Ottawa three years ago. Then, and this is when it finally dawns on him, Shane thinks: second?

“I think I am a mistake,” Nicolò confesses.
“I thought God didn’t make mistakes.”
“You tell me.”
Andromache nudges his shoulder. “I do not think you are a mistake.”
“If there is to be a man to walk the world for thousands of suns, let it be a man like Yusuf,” Nicolò says. “A man who understands the weight of the sword, who trades in kindness, loyalty and honor. A man who can find beauty in a simple sunrise.”
“And what of a man like you?” Andromache asks.
“There are already too many men like me in this world,” Nicolò answers. “And we can cause more than enough damage within a mortal lifespan.”
Andromache is silent next to him. Somehow, Nicolò knows she understands. For as old as she is, she has likely seen far too many men like him already.
They stand in silence for a few minutes before she asks, “Do you love him?”
Nicolò ponders for a moment. “I do not think love is enough.”
Nicolò di Genova has lived a long life. He has much to show for it, but somehow still nothing at all.
This is Nicky's companion piece to 'Beautiful Ghosts'. 'Beautiful Ghosts' should be read first (but likely not imperative).

Alternatively, Nicky and Joe's second meeting was over 900 years too late. And neither one knows the other is immortal, or that they've already met.

The men all go quiet, and Nile wonders if she's just committed some kind of immortal faux pas. "It is irrelevant," Quỳnh finally says. "Old enough to know there is no point looking backwards."
"You're the oldest," Nile murmurs in awe. Older than the Crusades. How much older? A few hundred years more? A thousand?
"No," Nicky says quietly. "Not the oldest."
Canon-divergent AU. Five hundred years ago, they lost Andromache to the sea. Now Quỳnh leads the team, a new immortal just woke up, and some pharmaceutical company is getting a little too interested in their business.

Nicky exhales a small, rueful breath. “I started with a church,” he says. “Not because I believed. Because I liked the quiet. The way the light was something you could measure and also not measure.”
“You still like the quiet.”
“Yes,” Nicky says. “Though I am learning to like certain kinds of noise.”

Andy pauses, still holding out a cup of mango juice. "I know," she says.
"Why, then?" Quỳnh asks. Her face is a little wind-burned, and she looks furious, all of a sudden.
Andy shrugs, because there's nothing else she can do. Her throat feels bare, despite the choker she's taken to wearing against that very feeling. "You're on my team," she says. "I'm not - I'm not saying you're mine. I know you're not."
OR: on the way to rescue the rest of their team, Andy and Quỳnh fall in love again.

“This is your fault,” she tells him.
Nicky blinks placidly, dried blood still spattered on his face. “I have done nothing.”
“You know what you did,” Andy says. “You’re contagious.” She points at Nile. “If you start saying everything happens for a reason, I'm not letting you speak to Nicky anymore. I’m not gonna have two of you giving me lectures about some higher calling.”

Because I have loved you for a millennium, as you have loved me, Joe thinks. Our souls know each other as the ocean knows the moon. We are in constant motion together, the push and the pull, the rise and the fall. One cannot exist without the other.
Instead, Joe manages a smile he cannot feel. “I have the keys to the car.”

Something went wrong in Merrick’s lab before Nile arrived with guns blazing. It wasn’t Andy’s bleeding mortality or Booker’s stinging betrayal.
It was Nicky, and by extension, it was Joe, too.
(The AU where the final death is not permanent. It’s a reset: it’s another chance. Nine years after Nicky’s final death, the fractured remains of the Old Guard encounter him on a job, and he’s not alone.)

I was thinking of having some time alone, Joe says, like he has been able to lie to Nicky in any convincing way since the thirteenth century, and Nicky lets him get away with it. He knows, as he has known for weeks, that something is off, but he says only ti amo into the rise of Joe’s shoulder and watches him walk away.
Getting in the car and directing the driver to follow Joe is as simple as breathing.

Summary
Her son is exuberant as always, his hands gesturing animatedly as he speaks, seemingly having forgotten the rest of the room already. It doesn’t look like Nicolo is doing any better, those blue eyes fixed steadily on Yusuf, pouring the entirety of his focus on her son. She herself is fixated on the sight before her, the way Yusuf doesn’t seem to realize how often his sentences include foreign words, how he absently reaches for another piece, breaks it in half despite there being more, and hands one over to Nicolo.
Oh.
Oh, They are in love.
Somewhere in the last eight years, between war and tragedy and great many differences, the two of them had fallen in love and Miriam is…astonished.
