Summary
The ship was eighteen days out of port when the storm struck. Waves rocked the ship and spray kept the decks too wet to walk on safely. Maude was well in her element as she played a 'friendly' game of poker with several of the other passengers. Ezra was terribly lonely as he sat, ignored, in a corner of the room. Finally, he slipped out and went for a walk. He found one of the staircases that ran to the lower decks and with a quick glance to see if anyone was watching, he swiftly descended.
It was quieter in the lower corridors. Ezra walked the length of the ship, smiling and greeting everyone he passed. Most of the passengers ignored him but a few of them smiled back. As he reached the front of the ship, he heard peals of laughter. Curiosity snagged him firmly and he followed the sound to one of the dining rooms. The tables had been shoved to the side and the children were playing in the open space. The rag ball shot back and forth between them as they moved up and down the length of the room. When it rolled between two chairs, the boy who had kicked it raised his hands in triumph.

Orrin looked at the picture of Chris, the only Larabee boy to carry the Larabee name. A fine boy, though you couldn't tell it the way he'd been carrying on. Maybe this Will of Linc's would do the trick. Certainly, he had seen more of the old Chris since his father's death two weeks ago than he had seen in the last three years. No, that wasn't right either. Chris was sober, but he wasn't laughing. He was angry that his father was gone and angry with himself for the way he had acted towards his father. He never laughed.He had discussed the fact that Linc wanted all of his sons there for the reading of the Will with Chris, Nathan and Buck. Of course they knew about Vin and Ezra, and seemed interested in meeting these two brothers, but Orrin knew that Josiah and John David would be a surprise.

The gently rocking train sang its lullaby along the tracks as it headed purposefully westward. The old conductor, making his rounds, took himself past a small car normally used for transporting the more expensive cargo, like jewelry and fancy European goods earmarked for the San Francisco shops, but on this trip it held ten passengers. Children, orphans from one of the large Eastern cities, were headed towards the promise of families.
Not every child in the car was asleep. The old man heard a tiny whisper from one of the youngsters, barely heard over the clacking of the train's wheels.
"Vin?" He listened for a moment longer, concerned that one of the orphans might be in distress, but moved on when things seemed okay.
"Yes, JD." Vin waited as patiently as his seven years would allow.
"Vin, do you think I could have a pony?" Five year old JD Dunne wriggled closer to his older cousin, trying to get comfortable.
