Summary
Will scowls. “Not funny,” he says for a third time. “Go away.”
Mike drops the stick unceremoniously. It falls to the damp forest floor, tumbling over itself before coming to a stop, splashing a few drops of water onto the hem of Will’s pants. “Okay fine,” Mike says. “I’ll bite. What’s your deal?”
The other fact of the matter is this: tomorrow, Will is going to walk into the Upside Down and not look back. Tomorrow, he is either going to kill Vecna or die trying — and Mike is not going with him.
Even the actual apocalypse had to end sometime, but Will didn’t exactly expect it to happen like this.

Summary
“You’ve really never?” Will asks, finally pulling a box of matches out of his pocket, not the lighter Mike had been expecting. He tips the box of Marlboros out towards Mike again, and this time, he takes one, trying to pretend like the subtle weight of it is not as foreign in his hand as it feels. “Not even once?”
“No,” Mike says, trying to figure out whether he should be getting defensive or not. “Why? Is it that hard to believe?”
“I just figured, you know, it’s easier to bum a smoke off of somebody than it is to get your hands on some booze,” Will says thoughtfully. He tucks the cigarettes back into his pocket and plants both hands on the stack of hay behind him, taking a careful step onto the bale already resting by their feet — and then, when it holds his weight, he hoists himself up, legs swinging. “And you’ve done that, so.”
Will sneaks out for a smoke break. Mike decides to join him.

Will raises his eyebrows. “Is that why you came in here?” he repeats, looking back down at the blue flannel. “To ask me about the weather in Lenora?”
“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

“My Will, he-“ Sir Michael paused, and for the first time he appeared bashful. “Well, he’s very beautiful. The fairest in all the land! And he’s powerful too, second only to the powers of my Lady Jane.”
He inclined his head towards El, admiration glowing in his eyes. “It was her magic alone that could vanquish the wicked sorcerer, rid us of his darkness, and I could free my love from his chains.”
Sir Michael turned, a wet smile on his face and he took careful steps towards Will. Will looked stunned by the story, staring at the knight with wide eyes.
“But it appears the prince’s beauty does not diminish, not even across worlds.” Stopping before Will, Sir Michael dropped to one knee, reaching up and taking Will’s hand in his own. “For you are just as fair, a sight that soothes my sorry eyes after so long alone in this strange land.
“Allow me to stay by your side, to protect you with my sword as I swore to you long ago. My prince, my guiding light-“ he lowered his head, lips brushing Will’s knuckles- “my love.”

Will's eyes flicked up towards the other Mike again, and he watched as not-Mike's eyebrows were slowly raising up in- surprise? Shock? Will couldn't tell.
Then, without warning, the other Mike dropped down on one knee and took Will's hand. Very, very slowly, he brought Will's hand up to his mouth and kissed it, his lips lingering for far longer on the back of his hand than necessary, and Will was going to pass out.
Then, clearlyderangedandneedstobelockedupinapsychward-Mike looked up at him with a look so soft Will was getting whiplash, because hadn't this guy just pointed a sword at his neck a minute ago?
Or: Paladin Mike stumbles through a portal, right into Will's bedroom in Lenora, and Will is so, so tired.

Summary
Sir Michael assesses them both. He seems to accept whatever he finds, nodding slowly. “I see. My apologies, it seems I have gotten ahead of myself. For how long have you two been courting, then?”
Someone chokes behind them, and for a second, Mike honestly thinks he’s misheard him. The look on his face is dead serious, though, stoic in a way that makes it very clear he’s not joking.
“What?” he croaks. He looks over at Will, who looks just as caught off guard as he feels.
“You need not be shy,” Michael reassures them, back straightening. “I, too, was hesitant when William and I first began our courtship. I understand.”
When Mike’s doppelgänger shows up dressed like something straight out of one of their D&D campaigns, Mike thinks he ought to be thrilled. There are alternate universes. There are alternate universes with knights and wizards and dragons. And, honestly, Mike probably would be thrilled, under normal circumstances. The guy is just so weird about him and Will.

Paladin Michael switches with our Mike. Will Byers finds an injured knight on his doorstep.
Mike fumbles for Will’s face, armoured thumb on his chin. “William?” Butts his forehead against Will’s. “It’s you,” he chokes. “It’s you.” Kisses him.
His lips and stuttering breath hot on Will’s mouth. Kisses him hungry and wanting. Messy, teeth scraping down his bottom lip as he sags against him.
Byers can’t help himself. If he knew this was waiting for him in Hawkins, he wouldn’t have played hooky for two years. Kisses his best friend back, hands supporting him, feeling him. Mike’s hair is longer; Will rubs his fingers backwards up his scalp, tugging. Then groans, and pushes away. “You’re bleeding."

Immediately upon recognising Will, Mike drops to one knee with a tremendous force and bows his head down, low. After a few seconds he lifts his head slowly, eyes looking directly into Will’s.
“William,” he says. “The Wise.”
Will’s eyes dart from Mike to Nancy and back to Mike again, his bleary-eyed tiredness completely gone.
“Wha…,” is all he can manage to muster up in response.
Nancy nods sagely.
“Sorry to do this to you, Will, but I needed to leave for work, like, thirty minutes ago, so please,” she clasps her hands together, her tone pleading, “deal with this?”Due to a 'clerical' error, Mike's DnD alter shows up at Will's doorstep, while the real Mike is nowhere to be found...

Summary
The Upside Down isn't the only alternate universe the party has to worry about it seems. When something inexplainable happens during a game of D&D, Will is replaced by... Will? Will the Wise appears before everyone, confused on why his friends are wearing such strange garbs and what dungeon he has stumbled into. Meanwhile, Will finds himself surrounded by fantastical versions of his friends clad in armor and robes somewhere far, far from Hawkins. The party now has a new mission to figure out how to get their Wills switched back around, and Mike needs to figure out what this feeling in his chest is all about.
Or
If Will had a nickel every time he was transported into an alternate reality that had some similarities to his normal reality, he'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but its weird that it happened twice, right?

Paladin Mike’s jaw tightened. “I do not own him,” he said immediately. “He is—” He stopped, swallowing. His eyes went back to Will softening, and that softness made Mike hate him even more. He could recognize the look, and saw it mirrored in his own eyes countless times.

“He is the Light. By your oath, I am bound to him. My liege.” He bowed his head slightly toward Will, his mouth wrapped around the word like it was a prayer. “My cleric.” He said after, softer.
“Oh my god.” Will flushed, impossibly. “That is crazy. He is actually crazy."
Max, who had been standing with her arms crossed behind them, muttered, “Jesus Christ,” under her breath.
Mike Wheeler is going to explode, because there is an alternate, armoured version of him, following Will Byers around like he belonged to him.
