Between Mercymorn’s — death, as it were, and Cytherea’s spectacular murder-suicide spree at Canaan House, John has suffered a string of betrayals from his most beloved Lyctors. He is in no mood to see the two original Lyctors that remain, especially not Augustine.
Oh, they live and work on the same space station in the middle of nowhere, but they might as well be in different galaxies.

For the first time you can remember, you’re hesitant to walk into John’s room. You’ve never been particularly brave, but the children are arriving soon, and John needs to know, so you knock gently on the door before entering.
John sits there on his shitty little sofa, wrapped in a faded blanket and surrounded by old mugs of tea, looking haggard as you’ve only seen him after the death of a Lyctor. He’s staring straight ahead at the wall, physically here but mentally elsewhere. It’s painful, to see John in such open mourning again. You hadn’t really expected this time would be different, but….
“John,” you say, with uncharacteristic gentleness. You suspect that John needs to be handled delicately right now. “The children are —“
“Stop,” John says absently.
And everything in the room stops.
“Did you know,” he says conversationally, “that I used to think she was the love of my life?”
