Red Hood had deliberately gone for and pressed the emergency beacon hidden on his belt. It could simply be that Red Hood had observed one of them using it. Or perhaps this newest criminal to Gotham just thought Batman was partial to the billionaire as some rumors suggested.

Eighteen years after the inciting incident, fifteen years after Gotham has been fully reintegrated after No Man's Land, the federal government would really prefer if Gotham City wouldn't still doggedly memorialise Harbour Day, the lives lost that night, the stubborn, damn near seditious amount of rage the city still feels about it. But Gotham doesn't work by mainlander rules anymore, and while they might choke the words down and avoid actually shooting the asshole in the face, neither Jim nor Bruce nor anyone else of Gotham City's pack will ever let the memory of No Man's Land, of Harbour Day, or anything else that was done to them, die.

Merlin spent the week and a half that Arthur was gone splitting his time between crafting careful explanations that never ended up explaining the important things, the things that would make Arthur listen, and making half-baked plans to escape to Ealdor. He found a number of fire-proofing spells that would have no effect if they decided to cut his head off, and figured out how to adapt an invulnerability spell he had been trying to find a way to cast on Arthur without him noticing so that it would protect him from being decapitated, but it would have no effect on anything but metal. Despite all his frantic searching, he did not find a teleportation spell, because that would have been too simple and if there was one thing Merlin had learned in his years at Camelot, it was that nothing was ever simple.

Arthur looked at him in shock. For the briefest second he felt a flash of annoyance. Because here was Arthur, vehemently trying to deny his feelings for Merlin, trying to get over him and let them just be friends; and here was Merlin, crying because he couldn't save all the orphaned kittens in the world. For a second, Arthur was competely furious with the fact that Merlin was so compassionate, that he was so caring and ridiculously big hearted. And then Arthur was just hopelessly in love with it.
