Or: five times being a mermaid has suddenly and unexpectedly been a problem (and one reason everything's always worked out fine in the end). Moments scattered over S1-S3 + post-canon with all four girls.

Summary
In this world, Zuko is the prodigy and Azula is the banished princess that chases the Avatar to return home. Of course, things are a little different from canon than simply copying and pasting one character onto another's story.
Starting with the fact that they love each other deeply and want to be reunited for good. But communication is for losers, so it might take a while.

Summary
Aang and Zuko swap bodies Freaky Friday-style and have to figure out how to work together in order to get back to normal.
Zuko is having an existential crisis, Aang just wants to have his friends look at him like he's not about to stab them in the back, and everyone else is *confused* to have the weirdly smiley ‘Fire Prince’ along for the ride.

“My Fire Grandpa — Fire Grandfather.” Sokka says. “He's in the palace, with Lala and my Fire Dad and Fire Mom. I don't see them very often. But they're there.”
“Could I meet them?” asks Kya.
Sokka thinks about it.
“I don't think you can,” he says. “I'm not Sokka there.”
Or: Sokka and Zuko are born on the same day. For as long as they can remember, twice a month they live each other's lives. People notice.
Alternatively, the story of Sokka and Zuko, as seen through the eyes of everyone but them.

Team Avatar has a few things to say about that.

Aang knew those swords. He’d seen them every day, felt the warm, if rough, presence of their owner in all his hardest moments and coldest flights. He was a strong figure, gentle in his own way. A Firebender who still used swords.

There needs to be more platonic soulmate AUs, you guys. Come on. Who wants to see Zuko get dragged into his redemption arc by his soulmates?

“He’s a—he’s a what?” Zuko wasn’t sure he’d heard her properly.
“Our father, Lord and Leader of Agni’s people, has undergone a ritual that turned him into a chicken,” Azula stated again, sounding annoyed she’d had to repeat herself, which Zuko didn’t think was really fair. “To increase his strength.”
“A chicken.”
“Yes, for strength reasons," Azula said, examining her sharp fingernails. "It’s a form of advanced spiritual meditation.”
"A chicken."
Deep in the depths of the Fire Nation's palace, Ozai and the Fire Sages (side note: that would be a sick band name) have unearthed a mysterious artifact, which fell from the sky many centuries ago. The accompanying scroll promises to grant those who complete a certain ritual total domination of the natural world. Obviously, Fire Lord Ozai completes the ritual with no hesitation.
Obviously, it swaps him with a chicken.
(The Ozai is a chicken and nothing changes AU, that nobody asked for but everyone deserves)

Summary
Zuko is a smart kid. He knows many things, like the first five katas from the advanced set his tutors started him on, and the defeat of the Xachu Island rebellions of 44 AG. He knows that Azula was the one who stomped up all of the garden roses two weeks ago, even though she told their mother it was a servant boy.
He knows that when he notices a faint burn on the inner curve of his wrist and hears the ticking of clock gears when there's no clocks to be found, he should tell exactly nobody.
Or,
A soulmate timer AU, where soulmates are those whose paths will have great impact on your own, but fate is more easily swayed by choices than it would seem. If both of you make it to a certain point in your lives and your relationship together, the timer goes off, cementing the roles you will have for each other. Until then, anything can happen.Zuko has five potential soulmates. This changes surprisingly little, in the grand scheme of things.
(Requested by my friend for her birthday, who said, "you know what would be cool? More ATLA family soulmate AUs." And I said "what a great gift idea!" made it into a character study and proceeded to sit on it for two years. Whoops. Happy birthday!)

Aang and Zuko are platonic soulmates. It takes an extraordinarily long time for either of them to figure it out.

“Oh spirits,” Azula says, grinning widely. The Water Tribe is full of idiots. “You don’t want to marry Zuko, he’s useless. Also, he’s already engaged.”
“He is?” Yue blinks at her.
“Of course he is, he’s going to be the Fire Lord, he’s been engaged since he was twelve,” Azula says. A useless Fire Lord who she’s going to have to prop up, if not outright usurp, but Fire Lord all the same.
The things she does for this family, she swears.

Summary
Zuko just wanted to take a breather after a stressful political summit in the Earth Kingdom. Unfortunately, some passerby with good eyesight spotted him entering an apartment through the door as Li and leaving through the window as the Blue Spirit, right before he left for the Fire Nation. The Earth Kingdom puts two and two together and, appropriately, gets four: the Blue Spirit has kidnapped Li, and presumably the other Fire Nation refugees who have been disappearing across Ba Sing Se. They must save Li and bring the Blue Spirit to justice!
Unwilling to reveal himself as either the Blue Spirit, wanted in both the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom for treason and petty larceny, or Li, who'll draw attention to his uncle's teahouse, Zuko does the next most reasonable thing: he panics.
Meanwhile, Mai, Suki, and Toph are busy investigating who's really at fault for the disappearances of these refugees, King Kuei has realized he can get away with some truly ridiculous antics as king, and the newspapers are getting suspicious of how protective Fire Lord Zuko is of these two random people he apparently picked up in Ba Sing Se. What's up with that, anyway?
