Greg was debating returning to his phone. He wasn’t the kind to make close friends with his coworkers and tried to keep work and home separate, but he was seriously debating making a friend for these situations. Richard was enough for occasional chats, but in a setting like this, he’d be professional enough to make Greg sneeze. He was allergic to excessive professionalism, after all. The choir director had reached for his phone, but Andy Devonshire started to speak before Greg could fully take it out of his pocket. At least the meeting was finally starting.
“I wanted to thank Richard for giving me the idea for this meeting,” the principal started as Greg’s lips quirked up at the confirmation of his earlier suspicion. “I know that most of you want some time to prep before the students invade, so how about we just go around and introduce yourselves briefly, and we can get out of here?”

The lighthouse interior was exactly as he remembered it, painted white, just like the exterior and, of course, rounded. Bare save for the stair that led up to the top and the dust motes that caught the light that filtered in through the small four-pane windows cut in a winding pattern along the stairs, it looked as untouched as the rest of the island, almost as if it had been waiting for his return.
That was a silly thought, and Greg huffed a laugh before taking a deep breath, glancing up once more before patting the wall and turning to return to his cottage.
He froze when a small, delighted voice said, with a strange sort of creaky timbre, “Oh! You’re back!”

[edited to include a photograph of a crochet pixie!Alex at the end] It had gotten so bad Roisin had dragged him to the doctor, and now Greg was here - at a last-minute booked AirBnB in the countryside with strict instructions to rest and for god's sake - get some sleep. As if it were that easy; every inch of Greg ached with exhaustion, but sleep? Sleep was so much worse.
Greg resolved to get through the next few days grumpily, miserably, and - of course - devastatingly alone in the entirely rational, and not magical at all, picturesque little Horne Cottage.
A rambling, gentle, melancholy, and silly story of Greg and an even more little than usual, Alex, meeting and becoming friends. Alex is a fluttering little pixie in this. Greg is still Greg.

The familiar joke, normally delivered by someone far different, made the breath catch in Greg’s throat, and he coughed to try to hide it.

Alex winced and scratched the side of his head. “I was, erm, sleeping?” he offered, although not very convincingly.
Needless to say, Greg didn’t look convinced. “Were you?” he asked flatly, clearly already well aware of the answer.
“No, Captain.” Alex said, and if his ears hadn’t already been blistered red by the wind, they’d be flushing. “I was playing a game with Mr Key and Mr Watson.”
Greg barked a laugh and shook his head. “Christ,” he sighed. “I should have you flogged for that.”
“Yes, Captain.”
Greg tried and failed to give him a disapproving look. “Try not to sound so excited about the prospect.”
Alex grinned. “Yes, Captain.”
