Summary
The wound on Alastor’s chest becomes badly infected and he’s unable to manage the pain even with drugs and alcohol. It gets to the point of him passing out in one of the hotel’s public spaces, unable to recover before he’s discovered by Charlie. Charlie drags Lucifer to Alastor’s side and tearfully begs Lucifer to save him. She’s having flashbacks to Pentious’s death and is terrified Lucifer might refuse out of spite towards Alastor and she just can’t lose another friend, she can’t!
Lucifer was never going to refuse, but the desperation and fear in his little girl’s voice breaks his heart all the same. Sure, he has his problems with the guy, but he wasn’t going to just leave Alastor for double dead. Who would he argue with over his morning coffee then? He overcompensates, just a tad, using his magic to not only mend the flesh but purge all foreign elements from the Sinner’s body…
Leaving behind a stranger with Alastor’s face and voice, but none of his demonic traits or abilities. Or memories.

“I don’t… I mean, I don’t do it because I really believe everyone is so one-dimensional. I just know that Heaven sees us that way, and maybe if I speak their language, they’ll be more likely to—ugh, I don’t know! Listen?” Charlie scoffs. “Yeah, right.”
Alastor twists to regard her, fixing her with a thin smile. “One lesson Lucifer tried to teach you that I do wish you’d learned—it’s useless to meet the enemy on their terms. You’ll always be giving up ground you’ll wish you hadn’t.”
Or: In the month preceding the battle with Heaven, Alastor and Charlie go for walks around the city, debate moral philosophy, and crack each other open like oysters.

Alastor’s eyes darted to it covetously, but he didn’t move. “Having shared custody of that prick over there makes us in-laws or something, I don’t know. And I can be nice. Look at me, trying so hard to be nice, and you’re hurting my feelings.” As he spoke, he dangled the trowel from one limp wrist like a faggot.
“Your feelings,” Alastor said dubiously.
“Yes, my feelings, because unlike some other macho cabrónes in this room, I’m in touch with my inner joy and whimsy.”
“Good lord. Give me the fucking spade.”
Or: Alastor and Valentino bond over shared hobbies, Vox is an iPad baby, and maybe there's something to this "relationship" thing after all.

Nobody was listening to him. Everyone else in the Outpost 56-B trailer was crowded around Xochitl’s computer, watching Rodan sculpt a world globe. Big deal. They’d already figured out he was sculpting a globe. That was last hour’s news. The new mind-blowing titan activity was making a radio.
Nobody cared.

Gaze upon their glorious ride and despair.

Vox's screen fills his field of vision, arresting his spiraling thoughts.
He's holding a needle and thread.
Alastor's smile is curdling at the edges, but he doesn't break eye contact. Vox's gaze devours him, always so wide and hungry, but there's something else lurking in his expression that has Alastor not quite as wary as he should be, perhaps, because it's not sadism or even cruelty in the way Vox is looking at him now. Vox's smile is calmer. He's quieter, no longer jumpy with excitement like he'd been earlier today, although still smug and a little too pleased with himself. Far more tolerable than before, at least.
"How about it?" Vox says, cocking an eyebrow. He holds the needle like an offering, like Alastor has a choice.
Alastor deliberately leans back, letting his head rest against the wall with the vain hope that it will make the room stop spinning. "By all means."
Or: Finally alone together, Alastor reopens some emotional wounds as Vox fixes his physical ones.

“You look like shit.”
A red gaze sweeps Lucifer from head to hoof and back again, followed by a well-sculpted eyebrow rising pointedly.
“Yes, yes,” Lucifer says from very much not the high ground. “Pot. Kettle. I’m aware. Why do you look like shit?”
Red places his free hand on his chest, fingers spread in gentlemanly offense. “I’m merely winded from all the effort I put into saving the Pentagram from your folly.”
Uh huh. No doubt Red’s a real hero. But first, a point of clarification. “My folly?”
“When you walked straight into the most obvious ambush of all time and were used as the unwitting power source for a doomsday device that nearly killed us all.” Black-tipped ears perk forward. “Ring any bells?”
Oh, fuck him. Also, no, not really. “Well, excuse me for underestimating what you sinners are capable of. None of you have ever managed to hurt me before in all the millennia you’ve tried. I’m not used to ambushes meaning anything.”
“Hence, folly.” Red tilts his head to the side at an inhuman angle, canned laughter swelling in the background. “You’re so good at it!”

The closest Alastor's ever gotten to romance comes in the form of—in order of increasing hilariousness—a couple of botched youthful attempts at kissing, cheap mass-produced smut comics, and the wildly entertaining tales of other people's sordid affairs.
He's never wanted sex. He's never wanted love. He's never seen a problem with this.
It's taken about a century, but he's pleasantly surprised to discover that the rest of the world is finally starting to catch up with his perspective.
More than anything else, he’s pleased that these new modern attitudes have given him extra opportunities for bad puns.

Unfortunately for him--or perhaps fortunately--the residents of the hotel aren't about to let him hide so easily.
