Benítez smiled. “I was simply wondering. Are you and Cardinal Bellini... intimate friends?”
“Of—of course not!” Lawrence stuttered, knowing his face and chest had to be breaking out in splotches of bright red color, and hating it. “What an absurd thing to say! I—I haven't... I would not—”
Benítez just raised his own eyebrows, seemingly unmoved by Lawrence’s outburst. “Why not?”

His hands are on the table in front of him, back arched as much as his old body can take it. Thomas can almost hear the creaking of his muscles; between that and his trembling, he must look a fright to poor Ray.
