“I mean…” Will started.
“Three. To be exact.” Mike interjected, locking eyes with Robin. He could see Will glance at him out of the corner of his eye.

“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

“And I just thought- y’know, since you finally had a crush, maybe you’d want to talk about it?” Mike bullshitted.
Will scrubbed a hand across his forehead. “Right. Um. He’s great, I mean, incredible, actually. He understands stuff, like nobody else does. He’s the only person who’s ever made me feel truly okay in my skin and I-” he cut himself off.
Mike’s heart almost stopped beating. Maybe he wasn’t totally crazy.
“Anyways. Focusing on him, when it’s hopeless- it’ll just make me feel like shit. I mean, after everything, it’s just me, y’know?” Will said softly. “Just me.”
“Yeah, but it doesn’t have to be.” Mike said. “Why should you be alone? Just because you’re…" he took a deep, shaky breath. “...gay?” The word took effort to say, and it felt like he’d run a marathon once it’d left his mouth, his chest burning.
Will stared and stared. “I…” his gaze flickered to the ground. “Because. He’s the only person I’ve ever…” he squeezed his eyes shut. “Been in love with.”
Mike blinked. Will was in love? With this boy who could maybe, possibly, probably be Mike?

Half an hour later, Mike keeps staring out of the torn-up walls of the truck, following the lighting red, pulsing walls they are crashing through – There is only one unrelenting thought in his head, repeating over and over until it feels like it is suffocating him, inside out.
Who the fuck is Tammy?
Or, while crashing into the Upside Down once again, Mike can't seem to focus on the end of the world, but only his confusing feelings for Will. Robin gets him on the right track.

Henry blinks, seemingly surprised by Will’s coldness. “I chose you that day, you know.”
And Will sees himself, small and alone, riding his bike through the darkness. He sees the silhouette of something tall and not-human. He sees himself crashing his bike. Running home. But the creature unlocks the door. It follows him into the shed. It gets him.
“It was you,” Will whispers, a hand coming up to the back of his neck. The monster that took him. The possession. The visions. “It’s always been you.”
(or the one where will’s connection to the upside down is a crucial part of season 4 instead of him getting sidelined, and how it changes everything)

The stories he grew up on are the same stories he's doomed to tell now. Of supernatural entities and learned helplessness.
No, the story he can never tell is one he's never seen or read before. One that could never have a happy ending.

Summary
It’s a picture frame.
The only one in his apartment actually.
Mike feels his throat closing up before he even flips it over. It was a gift from Will, shortly after graduation. Mrs. Byers had snapped the photograph of the two of them laughing, arms slung around each other’s shoulders. Neither of them are looking at the camera, neither of them even knew she was snapping the picture.
It’s maybe the only unadulterated moment of joy Mike can remember having in years. It was just after they’d thrown their caps in the air, the moment of realization that they had done it, they’d graduated high school with escape from Hawkins was on the horizon.
A crack runs through the glass of the frame now, damage from its fall onto Mike’s hard floors. The fracture divides the two of them, splitting them up on opposite sides of a seemingly impassable abyss.Fitting, Mike thinks.

At first, Mike was unsure how to approach him when he got like this. But they’ve been living together for months now, never further than five feet apart in their dorm beds, so Mike’s learned what works and what doesn’t.
It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.

Summary
The concept of what would happen after defeating Vecna hadn’t ever materialized in Will Byers’ head. And, now that he was living it, he kind of wished he’d been more prepared. Trying to hide his nightmares, the level of stoned he was, and his very, very new relationship with Mike Wheeler was nothing short of impossible with the wave of Religious Paranoia infecting Hawkins post-Upside-Down.
But who was he to complain? It could always be worse.
