“I don’t think I could describe myself if asked,” Armand says. “There are too many inconsistencies, contradictions. I don’t think it all makes sense put together. I don’t think I make sense.”
“No one makes sense all the time—no one is consistent.” Daniel shifts to rest his head on Armand’s shoulder, speaking the words into his lover’s throat. “I might not have been around as long as you have, but I’ve lived a helluva lot more life as a mortal, and let me tell you: to be alive is to be changed. Constantly.”
Armand’s voice cracks. “Then how can I know myself?” There’s another question lying underneath it, one he can’t bring himself to voice—how can I know if I am worth anything? Daniel seems to hear it anyway.
“Well,” he starts, before placing a soft peck on Armand’s clavicle. “I’d say I know you pretty well. And aside from the fact that you never help with laundry, I think the whole package is kind of great.”
