He knew as soon as he woke that there had been a frost. The throbbing in his ankle made it clear before he opened his eyes. It didn’t matter that his house was warm – it was to do with the pressure, the change in the air that had woken him early and was going to give him hell for the rest of the day.
He never could bring himself to regret the leg, even on days like this. Without a shattered leg, he’d never have seen Baelfire. He’d never have been a father at all. It had always been worth it.
But he still had to face the day.
