“They’re nice,” she said shyly. And they were. She was just worried that if she put them by her bed, she’d end up thinking about him more. And that was already taking up eighty percent of her brain capacity. “Thank you.”
He beamed, smile ramping up to ten thousand kilowatts. His hands wrapped around hers, large and calloused. He had a bandaid on his thumb, somehow still in existence even in a pseudo medieval world. It was pink. She’d put it there, kissed it better even, and he’d declared himself in perfect health because of her work.
“You’re nice,” he said, earnestly. He kissed her on the cheek then, chaste. Then, just as shy as she was, “‘m glad you like ‘em.”
For a moment, she felt as though her smile had a fraction of his brilliance, from the way he blinked and melted under it.

“Sometimes.” Ame kept it simple. Thumb pressed into the wound while her other hand felt around the glove compartment. Thankfully, the flow was sluggish, rather cold. Like dipping her hand into not-quite-yet-set Jello. Strawberry flavor.

“I don’t like being at these things all too much.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because if I don’t show up, more people talk.” Gigi’s tail scraped at the floor. “Why are you talking to me, you’re the most- most,” Gigi struggled to find a word that fit, “incredible person here.”
“That means a lot coming from someone who knows all the constellations and their stars.” Fauna’s eyes twinkled. “Those are much more impressive, in my opinion.”
“I don’t know all the stars.”
“I think you know enough of them.” Fauna’s cadence sounded like she was always on the verge of falling asleep, even when her eyes drilled through you with sharp and sparking alacrity. “And I don’t know any of them.”
“I have books,” Gigi offered again, but with steel slipped into her spine this time. She could not let nerves rob her of this. “I can send them over to you?”
“A book club.” Fauna smiled and she was beautiful even as the shadows of night slipped over her face like a mask. “I wouldn’t be opposed.”
“Well, I am posing.” And when Fauna laughed, Gigi felt like she’d finally said the right thing.

The Smoke Sea is on the world map, probably, in a small corner somewhere, maybe, in the oceanic blue, perhaps, where the very edge of East meets West. Split by islands and starlit, it holds a dark sky and darker secrets in the depths below. Terrible things happen, the fish economy is on shaky legs, and someone probably dies.
If anything, Gura just wants to fish. The creature under the water, watching her, thinks this is a mighty fine idea.

Pride burst in her chest as the shape moved under its coat, though it dimmed when it slipped off its chair with a loud thump onto the deck. But still! She’d gotten them back home, onto the ship, closer to the ocean and herself. It wasn’t good to spend so much time on land.
That surely wasn’t healthy at all.

Vigilantism is a questionable coping mechanism for dealing with trauma she won’t ever be able to shake, but it works just fine if you ask her.
