It only mattered that Charles was going to do everything in his ability to protect and love the real Edwin, and Edwin would do everything in his power to love and care for Charles.

Behind them, the door blasted open. Loki was thankful that they had left their armour on.
They turned around.
A group of SHIELD agents were yelling and pointing weapons but they were drowned out by the roaring blood in Loki's ears. They revelled in burning anger. Loki smiled, all teeth.
"I have just stolen your greatest Asset." Every word was laced with venom. Chokingly bitter. Sickly sweet.
And with those parting words, Loki disappeared.

Summary
He wasn't jealous (at least, he was fairly confident that he wasn't), but Charles would always be his first love, and letting that go was… hard. He wanted to move on from those romantic feelings and allow them to settle back into platonic friendship, he wanted to be happy for the two of them without the dull ache in his heart.
He was lonely.
It was in moments like that, when his heart ached and he felt the dark tendrils of loneliness creeping into his chest, that he thought of a kindred spirit. Someone who understood. He thought of a small scar above a teasing smile, of drawn-out honesty and of warm golden eyes that danced with longing, like the flickering of an open flame, of someone whose heart sang the same song of sorrow and hope as his own.
The Cat King had been right, of course. Edwin missed him.

"You’re right about me feeling a lot of feelings about the whole situation. Andrew tried to do right by me. Was it too late for all of that? Maybe. But it means something to me that he was going to try.”
Charles bites his lip, searching for words. “And it means something to me that someone wanted to stop him. They got away with killing me thirty years ago. You’re not going to let them get away with doing that to me again, are you?”
Instead of submitting his confession for murdering Charles Rowland 35 years ago, Andrew Fairfax has to drag his soul out the lake of St. Hilarion with no memory of who exactly choked these bruises into his neck but he's got a list of suspects and a pretty good idea of their motives. It seems like he's going to need the help of a couple of detectives to connect the dots.
(Or: Charles is having a lot of feelings that he's definitely going to unpack later. Promise. Edwin goes a little bit insane and he's hiding it so, so well. Crystal sees some stuff she'd rather she didn't. And, honestly, Niko has had better weeks. )

“Charles,” Edwin said. Then, louder, when Charles only nodded in response, “Charles! I’m sorry. I—”
“Edwin, don’t. Don’t you dare—”
“I sincerely wish we could have been friends for longer,” he said.
Charles looked crushed before he’d even finished speaking. He tried to get a better hold on Edwin’s suit jacket, but he had no footing, dangling in the middle of the train as he was.
Edwin let go.
Or: When David the Demon opens a portal on the train in an attempt to escape being exorcised from Crystal, Edwin gets inadvertently dragged back to Hell, leaving Charles and Crystal behind.

The facts, as Edwin understands them, are thus:
1. Edwin Payne spent 7 decades in hell
2. Edwin Payne spent the majority of those years being ripped apart by a spider demon meade of doll heads
3. On Tuesday 12 March, 2024, the Dead Boy Detectives investigated an old railway station on the outskirts of York which was home to a nest of unnaturally fast and magical spiders being bred by a local mage for unknown purposes.
4. Approximately 5 minutes after entering the nest, Edwin Payne began to experience the following symptoms: shortness of breath, blurred vision, shaking hands, a curious sensation as if something very large was trying to crack ribs he does not have by squeezing him in its fist.In which Edwin's trauma catches up with him and he finds the whole thing quite tedious.

Summary
The first time Charles attempts eyeliner as a ghost is a bit of a disaster. Edwin steps in to help and in the heat of the moment Charles kisses Edwin in gratitude. That's all it is, a platonic thank you kiss between best mates, or so that's what Charles says to himself and neither of them questions why he keeps up with the kiss tradition every time Edwin does his make-up.
