“Yes,” Ilya says, his mind sharpening attentively, “Tell me what you need.”Or: They communicate just a little bit better and let themselves be just a little more vulnerable, both with each other and their people.

They are thrown together at the same summer camp in Calgary, months before the Prospect Cup turns them into a rivalry everyone thinks they understand.
What nobody knows yet is that it starts here instead.
In dorm hallways, locker rooms, common rooms, the media room, the cafeteria, cigarette smoke, and all the stupid, electric little things that start to matter too much at seventeen, two future rivals meet too early and notice too much. A glance lasts half a second too long. A movie night means more than it should. A boy becomes the most distracting thing in the room.
By winter, the world will see a rivalry.
But first, there was the summer before.
