Will raises his eyebrows. “Is that why you came in here?” he repeats, looking back down at the blue flannel. “To ask me about the weather in Lenora?”
“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

“Wow,” Will breathes out, just on this edge of teasing. “You sound very confident about this.”
“Well,” Mike shrugs, swallowing hard in a desperate attempt to soothe his very, very dry mouth, “I don’t know why someone wouldn’t be interested in you.”
“Oh?” Will says, and it’s definitely teasing now, enough for Mike to feel himself turning warm, all down his neck and to the tips of his own – sadly unpatterned – socks. “Someone?”
“Yeah.” Mike nods. Oh, god. This is fine. “In a very arbitrary sense of the word. Just– people. Someone.”
Mike is approximately ninety-eight percent sure that his feelings are requited. That last two percent, however, has really been throwing him for a loop.

Summary
“Who was that painting for?” Mike started, apropos of absolutely nothing. There wasn’t any polite way to start this conversation, he supposed, and was almost proud of himself for ripping the metaphorical band-aid off.
Will’s confused smile dropped, leaving only his bewilderment in its wake. “What?”
“The painting,” Mike said, through gritted teeth, and his reasoning for being angry slipping out of his brain like it was water in a sieve. He wasn’t even sure what he was so angry about, anymore, just that Will had left and Mike had waited while he had moved on.

The nurse, or warden, or whoever she was cause Will really didn't fucking care, stopped outside the room and unlocked it. Room number 11, of course. Will could throw up from the irony. He wasn't really listening to the nurse's instructions. He knew the drill by now, and his head was killing him, and all he wanted was to lay down and rest...
"Oh my god."
He stared wide eyed at the figure sitting on the other bed who had spoken to him. Mike fucking Wheeler.
"Of fucking course," Mike muttered, rolling his eyes and turning away from him.
"Nope." Will immediately turned around and tried to leave. "This isn't going to work."
"We have no other beds available, we're at full capacity," the nurse said.
"I can't stay here."
"We have no beds."
"So switch me with somebody else."
"It's already past lights out, nobody is moving until morning."
"Then send me to another fucking facility," Will said through gritted teeth.
...Anger, fear, trauma, grief. One turned to alcohol. One turned to drugs. Now, somehow, they've ended up sharing a room at the same mental hospital. Will and Mike are stuck, forced to work through their issues together, for better or for worse.

Hang outs with Lucas and Max, while they did tone it down in his presence, felt like intruding on something real.
A brush of the knee in the middle of a movie.
A bump of the elbow as they made lunch together.
Shared looks across the room that they thought he didn’t notice.
It reminded him too much of when he was like that. When he had someone to love like that.
It reminded him of who he had lost, and how he’d never get to have that again.
Jealousy and envy, sharp and evil, sunk into his bones.

Mike’s gotta be cursed.
It was fine. For the first time in ages, Mike’s life seemed to be on an upward trajectory instead of plummeting downwards. College had, in some way, fixed things. Fixed Mike. He didn’t even feel the need to dissect what exactly had made his early teenage years so horrifying.
But like a curse, it’s all come back.
